Colin,

Sounds like constant velocity joints.

When the hubs are locked and the steering turned to either left or right lock and the vehicle is moving forward, a clicking noise can be heard, this is a sure sign that the constant velocity (CV) joints are on the way out.

To replace the CV the front hub assemberly would have to be pulled apart. This is not hard but if you have not seen or done the job before it is better left to a mechanic.

This is strange , it does it in a straight line and very badly when you either put the car under load or back off

Colin,

If it is happening in a straight line, it might be the uni joints on the front tail shaft.

Do you have any vibration when the front hubs are locked?

Hi Wayne

Yesterday afternoon i checked the uni joints , but did notice a bit of slack in the slip shaft splines , the problem is how much slack is to much , so i think i will start with that , i will remove the shaft today and have the whole thing looked at , although the uni joints look and feel good , it's an easy place to start rather than delving in to deep straight off .

as for vibration i did notice a small amount as well

Colin,

It can be hard to tell if the uni joints are worn if the shaft is still attached.

It will not take long to remove the shaft, a couple of 14mm spanners. Just watch your knuckles.

Once the shaft is removed you should be able to feel any play in the uni.

If it is the slip joint it is hard to say how much play is excessive. Have you tried pumping the slip joint with grease and see if it still has the noise?

From what you have said about the clicking and vibration I think that you might be on the right track.

If it is the cv joints then it will be very evident (noise) when in reverse and on full steering lock.

Have you checked that the hub springs have not rusted together due to lack of use, and that they are not engaging properly? Had this problem once after some creek crossings on a trip away, then non-use for some time after. All it took was a bit of cleaning up & fresh grease.

G'day Colin, you will find it is the assembly of the spring & slide in the hub, it is an easy fix, you don't have to jack it up, find someone who knows how it should be, so you don't have to pay to educate them, very tricky job but you won't have to buy anything, just a re assemble, seee ya, dingo
