Try,

Rockhampton - Marlborough via Bruce Hwy
Marlborough - Nebo via Marlborough - Sarina Road, Oxford Downs - Sarina Road and Peak Downs Highway
Nebo - Mount Coolon via Suttor Devlopmental Road
Mount Coolon - Charters Towers via Bowen and Gregory Developmental Road
Charters Towers - Townsville via Flinders Highway

From Mount Coolon you could also go via the Burdekin Falls Dam Road if it's open. Check at the pub and there's a phone number somewhere in the forum archives.

Alternativly head out the Capricorn Highway to Emerald then all the way up the Gregory Developmental Road to Charters Towers

Cheers
Ross

hey Rossc0,

Came back through Burdekin Falls Dam to Collinsville the other week, and the road is the best dirt road i have been on.....has been widened recently and is dead smooth, 100km/hr in most places. Adequate room now to overtake other vehicles if required.

Well worth the drive IMO.

Have not been on the road between Burdekin Falls Dam and Collinsville.

Did you cross over the Burdekin River just below the dam as if there is water over the spill way they usually close the road.

Here's why:

Only when it is overfowing :-)

Which ends up at least once every year....BTW i use the Sunwater dam level guage online to decide whether to venture forth.

Well worth the drive Ross...not sure where you live though. Nearby?

Live in the Whitsundays.

Have been meaning to do the trip up from Collinsville or Mount Coolum via Burdekin Falls Dam to Charter's towers.

Might have to wait until next dry season as not much spare time at the moment.

Nice to drive back (or forwards) via Historic Ravenswood and down to Clare and Ayr......some good attractions along the way (white blow etc).

I'll be in Airlie/Cannonvale to live soon (selling house at Mackay).

"Carmila Beach" is perfect. It's between St Lawrence & Sarina.

70k north of Rocky, turn right. Its a 100k out to Strange, a great place to FREE camp right on the beach. Boat ramp to launch a tinnie.

Plenty of shade, limited supply of water from tanks, tackle and bait shop and a small general store. Limited cell phone service.

It is a great spot Doug. I often camp at the beach access (not funny dunny park, 2k's before that) if you want to drive on the beach make sure you know what you are doing, it is VERY soft and has claimed vehicles before. Most times I am the only one out there.

As said by someone else Carmilla Beach iks also a nice spot but tends to be a little too popular through winter. I just pulled, a 2wd hilux towing a boat, out of a bog just a week ago(don't ask what he was thinking when he drove into the back of the dunes in that rig????). I have also driven out to the coast from Illbilbie roadhouse but can't remember exactly where the turnoff was, pretty sure locals working at the roadhouse would now. It too had some good isolated camping beside a river on the way.

Airlie beach is nice tonight too :-)) got to go to Sth Molle Is tomorrow......damn work kills me hehehehehe.

Cheers Trevor.

Stanage Bay is probably as remote as you are going to get, well formed Gravel road ( once again -- Drive to the conditions).
Good camping area with drop toilet, limited water, there is also some beaut isolated beaches that require some 4WD stuff to get into them, Stanage is 100Ks off the Highway at Google Earth 22 08 29.19 s 150 03 07.88 e.

Groper Creek is a good spot. About 15km. S/E of Home Hill.
