Winch lead hooked up under Bullbar

Hiya Guys

I hav been told once before but hav forgotten why,I thought its because if you leave the hook hanging straight out of winch it can be pulled out and hooked to something else for a prank....

Could someone kindly explain this to me.I notice it done to a few 4wd's about de place...

Hi. If you do not secure the hook of the cable, the cable on the drum will work loose and will not lay properly and it will also rub on itself and cause wear. Take it from one who has worked on mine winders for years

I keep the positive lead un-connected from the battery at all times until I need it , that leaves the winch in-operative so any one who who has ideas about hooking the hook to the towbar , setting in in gear and walking away will waste their time .

i think what Warfer means is not whether you leave the winch on power supply or you secure the hook to the cable.
i think he means some low life hooking the end of the cable to something like a tree or post without you knowing and driving off.

even if you disconnect the power supply you could still put the winch in free spool & unwind it.
i quess it would be hard to stop it barring a lock some how to stop this happening.

I think you're on the right track with your comment.

But, if you attach the hook to another point (eg: an eye bolt on the bullbar or a recovery point down on the chassis etc) and then proceed to wind the winch under power so there is some tension on the rope, I defy any person, even after moving the clutch handle to "FREE", to be able to manually unwind the cable.

So, if you're worried about this, hook the hook onto something, put some tension on the cable and then remove the power supply so nobody can short out the solenoids to unwind /un-tension the cable.

There's an urban myth about someone whose winch was spooled out and thrown over the car and attached to the tow bar at the back. The perpetrator is then said to have taken a paper clip and joined two of the three terminals in the connection plug and fired up the winch which then proceeded to crush the roof of the car and effectively slice it in two. As I said, AFAIK its a myth

Bonz its NO MYTH have seen it with my own eyes twice. Once at the NRMA auctions in Syd landcrusier they pulled the cable over the roof and hooked it to the tow bar they did use the controller it was still plugged in & tired to the bar & the other in syd another landcrusier. I put it in a thread years ago and I went home & fitted a hidden on/off under the bonnet. it made a mess of both cars.
In the old day, PTO winches were the go (still the best winch)I use to all ways put the cable to the chassis that way if the lever got knocked you could see the bull bar bending fwd most owners had drilled out the shear pin & put a bolt in its place (the Thomas did not have this problem as it was a pull up but the genuine toyota could be easily knocked & it would start pulling or feeding out & if you left it dis-engaged it would spool up & you would have to re-tension the cable before use

I think you will find this is a setup - a good one never the less.

The Jeep still has the original plastic bumper bar on the front - no bullbar = no winch.
