The left hand rear wheel fell off our 2005 Nissan Patrol, last Friday, on the Hume Highway, fortunately we were travelling approx. 80kph. The wheel travelled about 500m along the highway, and luckily did not cause an accident. We were also very lucky not to have been involved in a serious accident. We have since learned that this is not an uncommon problem with Nissan Patrols. We had new tyres put on the mag
wheels 10 weeks prior to this incident. This is a very serious problem and Nissan should be looking at a recall to rectify the problem before a fatality results. We will be checking the wheel nuts before every trip from now on. Any other suggestions welcomed.

A good mate runs a vehicle hire company and they have had
wheels fall off. He did tell me which wheel but I didn't take much notice.
Have a good one

Does anyone know what the wheel nut tension is on these Patrols? I have never worked on one but the reason I ask is the owner's handbook for my Hilux lists the tension at 76 ft-lbs for the 4wd model and 101 for the 2wd.
I always use a tension wrench on my car and 76 ft-lbs feels about the same as I would do it with a swivel bar and socket. I tried 101 with the wrench in a vice and it seems very high for a wheel nut. I can't imagine too many owners getting up to that tension with an ordinary wheel brace.
Few owners would know the correct tension for their vehicles or have the
tools to check it. Tyre
services usually have their rattle guns set at a one tension suits all setting. If the Patrols are supposed to be up around that level then maybe all these problems are the result of insufficient tension being applied by both tyre
services and owners.

Keith
Collyn's article is all sound advice but I think there is an issue with the Patrol 2002 to 2005 alloy
wheels. From my records all examples are from these
wheels. Nissan have still provided no explanation or remedy.
My advice to all series 2 and 3 owners is to use a torque wrench at all times.

Hi PJ
Here are some links to past posts.
The same thing happened to our 2002 Patrol in May 2006 and I tried to get Nissan to wake up but nil response.
Contact me if you need any more info.
Get a torque wrench and check at 96ftlb.
Peter
