G'day all I'm needing suggestions on maintaining the batteries in my L/C 105 which is only driven on weekends when not doing the touring thing.

If it is driven once a week, maintenance is not necessary. That will fully charge the batt and it should hold that charge until the next foray.

If not, either the batt or alternator is on the way out.

Jim.

Simply fit a Megapulse series IV to all the batteries to eliminate sulphation.

LINK: Megapulse series 4

Personally, I would buy a "smart charger" and leave it connected when not in use.

Yep; that's what I do with mine....I have 3 batteries in the Patrol and have them hooked-up permanently to a 3 stage charger on board which stays on 24/7 while the truck is in the carport waiting to be used on the weekend.

Keeps the batts topped-up nicely..

I have connected 10W Solar panel with 1A Diode to prevent the current draining over night back trough panel and it works a treat for me.Image Could Not Be Found

I'm with you

I have a 11W Solar Panel hooked up to maintain the aux battery.

It also travels with the Troopy so if for what ever reason I'm out bush and both battery's get flat I have some means of trying to charge them, slow but better than rubbing two sticks together..

cheers

Richard

I'm in the same boat as you. I top my batteries up every few weeks with a Ctek charger because they loose a little from the parasitic losses.

Phil,
do you know what causes these "parasitic losses" ?

Gday Mainey,
It all depends on what accessories you have installed - my battery isolator and voltmeter draw a small current which pull the voltage down a little. I'm not sure what the LandCruiser's electronics pull - not much I suspect.

What have you found?

Hi Cooperdog

The power loss from computers and radio memory etc is very small but will drain the battery over time.

I would recommend a small maintenance charger to prevent sulphation.

Derek.

cooperdog, says he's needing suggestions on maintaining the batteries in his L/C which is only *driven weekends*

If a charged battery drops Voltage by an unrealistic voltage in a week, obviously the battery is not holding the charge, or the 'parasitic loss' is huge.

Those questions must be answered, before a charger is purchased.

AS long as it's driven long enough to fully recharge the batts ( if only used for a once a week start up, then it won't be long ) then you won't need anything to maintain your batts !!

I have a car that sits in the garage for up to 3 weeks at a time and the batt still survives the normal 3 to 4 years before getting tired !!

Get a digital multimeter and check the voltage(s) at the end of the week and get to know how they are performing ??
