Who seen Top Gear Australia tonight, one driver was complaining about the dust , no wonder when they drive in it stirred up from the 4x4 in front, When ever I see these promotional outback drives and that includes some well known experts in the 4x4 scene for ARB and TJM they always travel in closed convoy , maybe scared of getting lost ,

Hi Doug,
That one is always good for a chuckle.

If you're on the towbar of the vehicle in front you are going to eat dust.

You might be right on the lost front or it's an insecurity thing!

Doug

I was in the unfortunate position some years back when I happened to be part of a promotion for what was then the new twin Turbo charged diesal Volkswagen Touareq.

Have to say it’s a magnificent car, and given our conditions at the time, I was amazed by its bush ability particularly with standard tyres.

The bloody thing would go anywhere we took it, and made the Prado look like a sloth in the bush.

But giving verse to your comment, everything is set up, and I’ll never be part of that circus again.

Regards

Kim

Yep, had a good chuckle myself.....I must say that its been pretty good seeing 4wd on there...even if they are really 'soft roaders'....

I couldnt believe how close they were to sniffy each others exhaust fumes! Now wonder there was dust!

and.....I wonder what hte cars suspension etc was like afterwards?? and the rock dings?? and the tyres??? there was no follow up except their opinions!

I don't think Range Rovers would be regarded as a "soft roader".

Right on the money Shaker, not only one of the most capable off roaders made, but the one that just about every over 4x4 maker copies.

And in all fairness to the other two, the RR is in a class way above those, so it really wasn’t about equals, just an attempt at a good story.

We had a 200 accompany us over the Donahue and Plenty Highways that seemed to have big dust issues. I saw that shot with one trying to swallow the dust of the car in front though.

I don't know how much longer I will bother with the Aussie Top Gear though. Half of it could have been edited out. No need to have the ablution shot in the background.Toilet jokes seem to be new to them.

It doesn't quite have the 'feel' of the pommy version, but maybe it will be a hit sold overseas. The outback might be a lot more exciting and the set up driving might seem more real from the other side of the earth.

I'm usually not a fan of pommy shows but I must concede that in this case the pommy Top Gear beats our version by a country mile. I hate to say it but they should bring the 3 English guys out here as commentators as our lot seemed pathetic.

Oh well Billy Slater and co made up for it.

I also noticed he just dropped the paper where he dropped the other stuff. No clean up or burial.
Couldn't even set up a tent, dust eating dills really.

I've never driven in those sort of conditions, but my 11 year old son said 'that looks like a dangerous way to see the outback...if you could see it at all from the back cars'.
Imagine the carnage if the lead vehicle suddenly broke something important and it stopped very quickly.
4+ tonnes of vehilcles in your boot! and then out the windscreen.

But, But ----------

"They did have all the windows closed and the air on circulation and it still leaked". rough quote.

Friend with a Lexus wonders why I don't trade in the old pajero on one. :o) 1st issue for me is the cost, now I can show him a good 2nd reason. :o))

Horrors, maybe he drives that close too? Remind me not to take him on a trip out west.

Didn't see them tackle any water crossings?
Last trip we did to the NT had a few medium depth crossings (500 to 700 deep) in Litchfield and friends new Prado leaked through the floor. Wonder if the Lexus does? Too many holes in the floor for snap fastening down bits of plastic trim and carpet.

I did see a clip of Jeremy doing an "Australian" edition some time ago. It was well put together, although you could see the 'scripting' and the 'director's touch' coming through.
There he was (Jeremy) driving along a boring dusty road, (yawn) "Its so flat, and nothing here" - Immediate cut to dust, noise, chaos, flying rocks, sticks etc and a huge road train blasts past.
Cut away to see the size of the truck, and the driver, story follows on to introduce driver, truck, lifestyle etc.
Quite the best episode I have seen of Top Gear.

Air on recirculation and windows up does not increase air pressure inside the vehicle, If on the other hand you have fresh air being rammed in then the the faster you go the more pressure , or the better the fan the more pressure, ....Logic.

Agree with you Doug, air on recirculate doesn't work.

That's why I hang back and try and let any dust settle a bit.

The rest of the dust that does come in is character building. :o)
Why travel out west if you don't like dust, it's part of the experience.

Now every time I go over a speed bump in the suburbs and I get a fine spray of dust dropping out of the ceiling, it brings back some good memories.

They didn't show how they went in the bull dust around the Georgina River at the end of the plenty.

I usually drive with the window down anyhow, even when I was working the car as Pilot I had to have the window down to signal to oncoming vehicles , even in the 48+ deg heat around Meekatharra , I also remember quite well the truck I used to drive to many destinations like new mine sites out over dirt roads, It had no A/C so had to have both windows down in summer and going to the Osborne Mine I used to via Boulia and up the dirt track to Chatsworth Stn , then onto the sealed Haul Rd , geez I had dust in the bunk, on my shoulder, in the hair , and slept in it , all part of the job and I loved it,

I can’t comment about a Lexus or an Audi, never been beyond sitting in them but as far as dust goes, the earlier RRs had a problem with dust getting in through the seals around the rear gates.

The new RR does not suffer from that problem and not keeps the dust out if set to recycle, if you select auto sense on the air-conditioning intake, the vent are closed and the air con is set to recycle automatically if dust or fumes are sensed.

How they drove wass incidental, inasmuch as they were all driving in the same manner, the fact was that the Lexus let in much more dust than the Audi or the Range Rover.

I'm starting to warm to this show, my son likes it so I watch it.
I thought they seemed a bit close but no doubt it was setup for the camera man parked ahead.
You would reckon all cars had a go at driving in the dust.

If they wanted to keep the 3 vehicles in shot, they had no choice other than drive in each others dust.
Reckon about a 3km gap would have been needed to be dust free unless there was a good side wind.
cheers

They were using hand held UHFs when the show first started.

And I agree with austastar about being close so they could fit them all in a shot, I do not think these fellow are that stupid as to follow each other that close for 3,000 Ks.

I think they admit not to being 4WD experts (and it shows) but then they have to also be able to take a supercar around a race track, different set of skills.
I must admit I would like to see a bit more on the vehicle, whether it be a 4WD or a Merc.
Bit of a worry that a car manufacturer would provide these guys with a vehicle that is not up to scratch, but I guess not too many Lexus see that sort of driving.

Lexus was the first in this country to have the dust/smog sensing air con (as well as many other automotive firsts). As a long time Lexus Salesman, now retired, I can assure you all, that this is a set up and is simply another case of tall poppy syndrome. RR is wonderful, yeah yeah, yeah - heard it all before. Why then are the Lexus' so much more refined and reliable? Not enough space on the entire "www" to start talking about the knockers. Green eyed monsters are real mongrels to carry around.
That whole show is a waste of resources - and time - don't watch it - go out for a drive - your time will have been better spent.

P.S - didn't see the program - tried watching the first 2 - gave up really fast.

P.P.S - would rather look at "knockers" than listen to knockers.

I am guessing the Lexus is identical in door seals etc to the 200 series. Are there any reports of the 200 series being prone to dust ingress? Frankly, I wouldn't waste my time watching this show. The content to crap ratio is about 1:10.
