Hi there,
I am looking at getting a new car.
I have been looking at a Holden Captiva LX because it is bigger than the new sports wagon (have two small kids) but also looks to have a bit of off road capability (
well more than a station wagon).
We will be soon getting a camper trailer to enable us to do more
camping trips.
Today I noticed the Jeep Cherokee Sport seems to be more of a 4WD not an AWD.
Does anyone have one? Are they 4WD or AWD. Are they good off-road (mind you I wont be
hill climbing etc maybe Fraser island with a mate). Can a dual battery system be installed.?? I assume they would be better off-road than the Captiva.
Thanks Guys.!!!

Hi Bruce n Sal,
I had an earlier model one (straight 6, 4.0 litre petrol) for 6 years and did 130,000 km in it. It had heaps of grunt but was a bit thirsty and the only problem I had with it was the Crank Angle Sensor failed at 115,000 km. I was out bush at the time and no one could find the fault as you needed to plug it into the Jeep service computer / analyser to find the fault so it came back to
Perth on the back of a truck ! Overall, I was pretty happy with it but the fit and finish was not a patch on Jap 4wd's but nothing else broke or fell off. It was pretty good offroad as it was a true 4WD with hi/lo range and was especially good in sand as it was a lot lighter than Tojos / Patrols as it does not have a full chassis. Don't know about the dual battery system though.
The $0.99/litre fuel deal on Holdens needs to be considered if purchasing a new vehicle though.
Cheers
Old Mal (and getting older)

Old Mal,
Things have improved quite a bit since the days of their first arrival.
Dealer knowledge and service is still about the same ( in most cases ) but Australia aftermarket dealers probably offer more than what is available for the main name brands.
Fuel consumption is relative ... Have access to a stable of three of them and all are cheaper to run than a diesel 47 series troopy I had. Round town and a heavy foot .... fairly excessive figures and I dont check it ... 11 to 13 on hwy with tyre on roof. Figures vary dramatically with different owners variations / mods of the std vehicle.
Crank angle sensor ... normally goes at about that mileage ... on lots of brands ... Last one cost me $80 odd dollars and took 20min to fit myself. Easily diagnosed by lack of spark and no power to fuel pump ...
In addition to the usual toolbox full of bits .... I carry a $200 scanguage ( computer analyser ), laptop, digital parts manual and service manual which lets me .. and bush mechanics .. effect repairs easily. Also includes a list of component suppliers.
Agree on fit and finish ... but its all surprising solid.
Going by the couple in my neighbourhood ... buy an AWD commodore wagon and you'll need the fuel rebate ...

Hi Oz,
New one, the petrol version is cheaper than the Captiva, but the Jeep has cloth trim and the Captiva has Leather but no real 4wd.
That said i don't know if i ever will need a real 4wd.
It will be bought as a lease car through work, I get a car allowance.

Ahhhh .... whole different ball game then .... lolol
Havent had anything to do with the newies ... more than enough electronics in a dinosaur like the XJ. ( capability too, lol )
I know that the majority of KJ ( model before ) owners are happy with theirs. All reports are .... pajero/prado equivalent ... with american quirks instead of japanese.
Also ... dont worry about the U.S. XJ forums above but you should get some answers/info in you post a question in the 'General Jeep Chat' section of AusJeepOffRoad.Com ---- You may get some alternative answers from some " real 4x4ers " too ( LOL ) but dont let that deter you. They're a fun, mixed bag over there.
My personal opinion is that it doesnt matter what you buy new these days .... quality, back up service, reliability etc has all been thrown out the window in preference to greed in profit rather than just profit ... no matter the brand.
Regarding brands .... A new "Jeep" is a chrysler - something to bear in mind ( wink )

Thanks OZ
KJ, XJ... means nothing to me. I only thought of a jhep this morning as i saw one on the way to work and thought wnader how much they are and if they are a real 4wd.
I did notice the sport has got leather trim as per the Captiva. SO really the only real significant difference is the real 4wd part.
Might test drive one on the weekend and hopefully if i like it the wife likes the look of it, casue that is her biggest hurdle. :)
I have been reading some bad reports on fuel economy, do you have any idea how bad they really are.

New Chrysler Jeeps are as much a real 4wd as as 200 series toyota. Independant Front
Suspension, luxury interior etc .... just like a Captiva. ( wink ) They also have a couple of wagon styles in different sizes ... might be more options for the missus to look at than you think.
Also Have a look at the JK wrangler while you're at a dealer ... Lots of people buying them for general use ... and touring.
The fuel economy fairy tales are in relation to the 4.0l line six cylinder petrols used in earlier models ... however its all relative ... read my comment above ... re the 47 series.
The later V6s and diesels are as good as any.

We had a Patrol with leather seats and u need the seatbelts to stop you sliding off them when on offroad angles. Wouldnt get another with them. At least with the cloth you can put
seat covers on and stay put.

Bruce n Sal,
Have a real" close" look at the Captiva as its a Daewoo badged Holden I believe.
Not knocking the Jeep however the petrol version may be a bit heavy on fuel particularily when towing.
In this size AWD I would be seriously considering the Hyundai Santa Fe which comes with turbo diesel and 5speed auto.Good economy, traction control and available with 7 seats.
Note; I have no vested interest in Hyundai and in fact drive a Toyota however have driven the Sante Fe and impressed with the fit ,finish and diesel motor.
Cheers

No I don't have either, so no first hand info unfortunately.
Interesting comparison - guess you will really know once you drive them both. Jeep is based in traditional 4wd concept with low range, so more ability there.
Not sure about dual batery capability - would think the jeep may lend itself better to this, due to it's 4wd
heritage?
I don't think re-sale is crash-hot on either, so check that out re leasing. (may be a harsh call for captiva, as it's a bit early to tell yet)
One thing to perhaps consider: would you consider a Captiva if it was called a 'Daewoo S3x'? Only mentioning this, as this is what they are. Having said that, they are pretty popular, and (for what it's worth) they were recently voted as the most popular car amonst 'mums'
Also, are these two vehicles really any bigger than x-trail / rav (Captiva is more comparable to these in terms of AWD).
Just tossing in a few ideas that may or may not be of help
Cheers
Mark

Hi Bruce n Sal
one point to look @. I did own a Jeep CRD, but a grand. great truck,
but only problem was that they are made for left hand drive. so their passenger side, becomes our drivers side.
the centre console below the gear stick, near the foot pedals, protrudes into, our drivers side, a fair way.
so u end up sitting slightly to the right to get yr feet around this.
this is Ok for short trips, but on a long trip, buggers the back & hips. thats why i sold it.
not sure if this is the same on the Cherokee. ???
good luck Tom
