The Jack's Back - $8K+ For Engine Repairs

I pick up the repaired Jack tomorrow (see thread 63038)

The fault was traced back to a badly cracked head that cross connected the fuel, cooling and oil systems.

The total cost to the car yard was over $8K. High $5K was for parts including:
New Head
New Injector Sleeves
New Fuel Pump
New Filters (all oil and fuel)
New Cooling Hoses (all rubber components and the heater hoses as well)

Other work involved a fuel injection service and complete fuel, cooling and oil systems flush.

Labour was over $2.5K at trade rates.

The manager at the car yard was great and very helpful despite spending more than half of what I paid for the beast 6 weeks ago.

Bet he wasnt impressed with that, at least it happened before you ran out of warranty. Glad to hear the bloke at the yard didnt try and palm you off or do a dodgy repair. At least now you will have piece if mind for motoring along. WHG

Soooo annoyed that you have it all fixed (its good though) in 6wks and we are still fighting to get ours diagnosed proplerly after 4 months!!
Glad it was his money, not yours!!

Hi Laura,

I have been following your sorry story about the Grenade and feel for you. Although it doesn't make me feel better, it is easier find out what is wrong when your pride and joy just goes *BANG* and oozes life blood everywhere than to find something like you describe.

And it was actually fixed in 10 days, we have only owned the beast for 6 weeks when it went stopped.

I would certainly rather have it go bang too....! better than having mechanic number 5 looking at it soon.

Do you still feel confident in yours though? Im not sure if I would once ours gets fixed - IF it does.....Im tempted to sell her when its all fixed!

Good to hear it is fixed.

Just been through that myself, getting the head and a few other things done. Cracked head because whoever in the family was driving the paj wasn't looking at the temp gauge.

To late for recriminations now, just had to get it repaired. With a cracked head, it is worth nothing anyway.

Put a low water alarm in to try and stop it happening again.

As someone who replaced the motor, turbo, intercooler, clutch and radiator within the first 6 months of buying a car that was 8000 km outside warranty, I say lucky you Pete. Bouquets to the dealer for being forthright and honest about it to.

I have just recently disposed of my Diesel Jackaroo.
My advice would be to move it on. The head on mine had been removed several times and replaced once with a myriad of other faults along the way. I feel they are way to complicated with extra pumps for injector oil etc Too many extra things that can go wrong and maintenance costs that leave you with a limp. You also need to take it to mechanics who really know what they are doing with these engines. Especially injector and sleeve assembly which require following the correct procedure to the letter or it can cause ongoing problems.
I apologise for sounding so negative but I am so happy to see the arse end of mine. It was a nice vehicle to drive and I will miss that aspect of it. Also the rated capacities for towing were fairly low. For memory the payload capacity was only around 500kg without bullbar, towbar and other extras. tow a 2 tonne caravan and put 200kg on the towball (with the necessay weight distribution hitch to allow you to exceed 120kg) and you could easily find yourself overloaded.
