Fraser Island Feedback

I am thinking about heading off to Fraser around May next year (2009). Can anyone tell me if it is possible to take a caravan (similar to a bush tracker) onto the island?

Any advice/experience would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't if the cross island tracks are as soft as they were a couple of months ago. However, what is your tow vehicle and where will you be going ?

It's not actually my vehicle. It will be my son's in-laws. They have a Landcruiser, I think a 100 Series..auto. My choice would be to land in the south and travel up the east coast. I have not been to the island for a good number of years..probably going on 6 to 8. When last there I told myself that I would not be back because of the tourist buses and the rutting they caused. (I/we have to go for support)

here's a pic of us camped on fraser this year just short of dundaburra. time it for an hour before lowtide and you shouldn't have a problem getting up the beach. the bigger vans were a 16ft standard onroad van with a spring over done to it towed by a GU Nissan patrol, and the other big van was a 16ft Jayco expand offroad van towed by a 100 series cruiser. other 2 vans were 13ft millards towed by a 100 series cruiser and the other was a nissan navara.

looking at the pic it's hard to see the bigger vans, both are at the back lefthand side of pic, one is hidden behind the marqees. van in the righhand side is a little windup jobbie towed by the navara.

no worries al, this year we saw quite a few caravans up there, definately alot more then previous years when we used to hardly see another caravan on the island. getting onto the barge at inskip will be the hardest part of the trip, but let your tyres down to about 18 psi and you should be fine. i got bogged coming off the barge when leaving the island, this was because i had reinflated my tyres to 25 psi for the 2 weeks we stayed there and then didn't bother to reduce them for the trip home. i let the tyres down to 16 psi when bogged and used a set of maxtraxs and then just drove out of the bogging. i drive up the island on the hard sand towing the van in 2wd (occasionally put it in 4wd if looks soft in sections), at lowtide it really is quite easy going for most of the trip

Hi Allen

As the others have indicated should be no worries with a bit of prep and common sense. One thing to take note of for May 2009 is the Fishing Comp is on 16th-22nd and the island gets very busy the week before, during and a few days after the comp.

Cheers

A
