Can anyone advise how I can fix the constant problem of the rear barn doors popping ajar whilst driving on my 2001 GU Nissan Patrol. I have had them adjusted by Nissan service each time I get the vehicle serviced but the problem keeps occurring.

Hi Adey

Never had my come ajar , but when new they would rattle sometimes.

At Nissan once getting parts and mentioned rattle to Nissan service and the guy waltzes out with a big hammer and wacks the lower U bracket that the two doors latch to with the hammer to push the U section forward toward front of car.
Very impressed I was , and every year or three I give mine the same treatment.

Hi Adey, i have the GQ and have never had the door come open, but have had lots of squeaks and rattles from the rear doors. I solved all the probs by pulling all the locking devices off and cleaning them and dry greasing and adjusting them. This has solved all the problems. All the door catches and locks have bolts to hold them. I loosen them a touch then open and shut the door several times to get them true, then push the catch in a smidge, and lock the bolts tight, If the catch is to tight by being hammered in to far, you might find things are under stress, and may need to be loosened a smidge. Have found understanding your vehicle solves more problems than any paid mechanic can ever fix. Col

Hi Guys ,

You can adjust that bracket without bending it ,if you loosen the 2 mounting bolts there is a nut plate underneath that moves.

I would suggest marking the original position of the bracket , if you get it really wrong you can go back to something workable.

With my one the door open light was flickering or on alot adjusting the bottom bracket out a little made the top latch work properley.

Hope this helps.

Just poking the borax actually.

I didnt really have any gripes with my Patrol and so far none with the Toyota.
Every make and model has its problems. Some more than others.
The rear doors on my Patrol at 36,000 used to rattle and squeek a bit on tarmac even. Should have used my 16lb hammer by the look of it.
Advice I got was never touch a mine truck with boxing gloves on.

A lot depends on the driver as well Cars are like women, treat them well and they will look after you.

Treat them bad and you get what you deserve.

Like wise there is someone for everyone.

Some people even buy Mitsubishis LOL

Nothing like a little stir I reckon.

Got to keep the Nissan Toyota thing going

Its been a bit quiet on here this last week things have been only "moderate" LOL

Keep on truckin'

I was thinking I had no idea at all what the problem might be until I re-read your post !!!

The problem is you get it serviced at nissan!

I wouldn't trust a Nissan dealership as far as my mum could spit.

Clean it the latch at the top of the door.

I know it sounds too simple to be true but it fixed mine about 3 years ago and the problem has never come back.

I acted on advice from a panel beater. All I did was put the hose in there at low pressure and then I gave it a good spray with WD40.

I also stopped carrying the high lift jack on the door. I don't know if that was the cause but it did not stop popping ajar when I took the jack off. I just figured it was not helping.
