half way through our trip to fraser and disaster has struck.
the
camp oven we use for roasts and bread making has failed us. when using the heat is distorting the seal between lid and base. bread was only half cooked after 1 hour.
it is a big unit and have thought about a couple of sheets of alfoil to help with seal. any constructive suggestions?
we were planning roast chicken and vegies for lunch tomorrow so are desperate. we may have to have fresh whiting instead or if no luck in the morning boiled worms on half cooked toast.
cheers peter

mmm cast iron shouldnt distort...no matter what the heat...maybe if you were getting it to blood red colour then i might say ..Possible but still unlikely....cast is very stable when heated...cracks easier though, especially if you put cold
water on it when stinking hot.
is it new or a recent addition...maybe its a faulty lid or base?
hasnt been dropped or been subject to a severe blow? Cast iron may bend before it actually cracks and it could be out of shape, and if so very unlikely you'll get it back into shape

May I ask are you cooking on coals? If you've prepared coals and then put the
camp oven atop some coals set aside from the main fire then it seems amazing that so much heat could be generated as to distort the seal. Could it be that it got damaged by putting it directly into flames?
If all else fails forget using it as a casserole -
cook without the lid and use it as a saucepan/wok etc and strip the chicken off the bone, chop up the vegies and make a stir-fry. You'll obviously need to put the
camp oven base over hot coals/fire to do this and stir frequently as you would a normal stir-fry.
Hope this helps - don't let it get you down,
camping (and especially
camp cooking) is meant to challenge you!! ha ha take it in your stride and make an adventure out of it. You knows you may end up inventing something unique!

thanks michelle i am using heat beads.
this ia an oven i use rarely and the lid only fits snugly in one position. now it appears to pop up when hot.
i will play with different alfoil setups.
i pride myself on my cooking after years of "inventing"

When cooking on coals you can seal the
camp oven with a crust around the lid to seal the pot. Use a simple mix of flour, salt and
water. This of course will be broken if you check the contents so is best used when cooking items where you have a fair idea of the cooking time.
The second solution is to use a foil collar running around the top of the pot (this also a good method if you are smoking items in the
camp oven), this will depend on how big
the gap between the lid and the pot has become.
cheers :)

Are you using the oven in a fire built on sand.
I once cooked a damper on Fraser and it jsut burnt to a solid mass of charcoal in the time it would normally have take to
cook.
I figured it was because the sand was retaining so much heat and reflecting it back to the oven. This could be what is distorting your oven and letting out the heat.
Try a smaller fire.
Just my 2c hope it helps.

If the sand is absorbing the heat, could try putting a layer of alfoil under the coals to reflect some heat back up.
May not need as many that way.

worst case boil the chicken and vegies and have chicken soup? I gather you should still be able to
cook with it, and that it's just the lid that' buggered.

Hey Peter, your lucky the QLD Gov, in its infinite wisdom, even allow you to have a fire! the last,
well many times we have been no fires permitted, I assume that has changed?

Hi Peter
Thanks for letting us pour unfortunate formites at work know by modern technology that your gourmet lunch on Fraser Island
could be ruined.
I am sure last time i was there in April the
Orchid beach shop had
camp ovens for sale if all else fails.
Rob.
