XGS shockers

I had XGS shockers and springs fitted to my Triton from new. I find the front end is a bit like a pogo stick. The dampening characteristics of the front shocks are very ordinary. It has been like it since new and have now done 22,000k.
I discussed this with TJM dealer who said it was normal with the weight of bullbar and the winch.
Has anyone else experianced this problem with these shocks or have any comments re other shocks that would improve handling?
Cheers,
Tony

Tony

I had them all round on my Landcruiser for about 150,000 km. Pretty mushy when they came off but boy they had done some hard work.

I'd have to give them a tick.

Hi Max,
You've certainly had a good run out of them to get that many ks. I changed from the standard Toyota shockers to OMEs at 140,000k with my last Landcruiser. I only changed them then because I thought it wasn't handling as well.Shocks hadn't leaked at all.

Tony

I had the same experience a couple of years ago with TJM XGS shockers with them fading very quickly and the vehicle pogo-ing continually on the Oodnadatta track. I ended up getting credited for them and moved up to Bilsteins that were much, much better. Even the standard Toyota shocks were better than the XGS units so it makes you wonder if anyone has a good run out of them unless they just stay on the bitumen...

TJM dealer wouldnt recognise problem as a warranty claim so have not had much luck with getting a credit for them and swapping them over. If I could I wouldnt hesitate in changing them.

Think I recently heard from a TJM branch that the XGS product comes in both plain hydraulic (non gas) and the high pressure gas version - which ones did you get ? And are you towing when you get this pitching ? For what it is worth, I had HP XGS on the rear only of my Jackaroo for some decent outback trips and they went very well over several years - chose Koni mono HP gas for the front (also top shelf) - I'm about to go HP XGS on the rear of the cruiser - I already have Billies on the front.... my rough plan is the 'cooler' mono tubes front where stone damage is far less likely, and twin tubes on the back due to the constant shrapnel in that area.

Hi Darian,
The shocks are the gas type and not towing when it happens. It bounces and feels spongy whenever I hit any bumps.Despite having heavy duty springs to compensate for the weight of bullbar and winch, the springs feel soft also with it often bottoming out.
Sounds like i probably need to look at changing to Koni or Billsteins.
Cheers,
Tony

I wouldn't suggest that mono gas will necessarily solve your problem - and you may currently have shock valving unsuitable to your application - I fitted the mono gas units to hopefully handle corrugations better - that worked out for me, but different vehicles involved of course. Hmmmm...........

My XGS shockers on the patrol (complete with bullbar and winch) have done 40,000Km in the past 12 months. This includes the CSR and Gibb River, plus up to the Major Mitchell Falls (all good (horrendous) corrugations). After several hours of torture, they would be almost too hot to touch, but not once faded out. They are still holding out and show no signs of extra bounce.

I recently sold my 99 Hilux that had XGS's fitted at 80K as one of the Toyota fronts had leaked. The Toyotas were shockers, and no I don't mean they did their job LOL. Talk about pogo I would've got airborne on the whoops if i didn't know the tracks so well. The XGS were a fantastic improvement, on one particular dirt hwy the sand forms into waves a couple of meters apart so at speed you get a roller coaster effect - try that on crap shocks and you would keep on bouncing as you head over the shoulder and off into the scrub. With the XGS's I could take the corner flat out no drama's. I've done the same stretch in many 4wd's with varying setups and I found the TJM suspension with XGS the best out of the bunch.

Sold the Hilux at 180K and they were still v.good.

We live out remote so the car lived on some of Australia's worst dirt hwy's as well as all the usual tracks for camping, touring, exploring, river crossings yadda yadda..

I assume you upgraded the suspension as well as the shocks?

I don't know Triton's that well but I'm guessing torsion bars - as it's new - so what height have you got the front setup at?

I'm also concerned the torsion bars have been wound up to accomodate the heavier front end. It seems strange that TJM should be blase about it?

Regards,

Slammin.

G'Day Slammin,
Its the current model Triton ML and has coils and struts. The springs and shocks front and back were changed from new. The rear set up works well.On a recent trip there were fair few sections to experiance that roller coaster effect and thats were I had real problems with my set up.
I havn't pushed the issue with TJM yet just a discussion after doing around 3000k when I thought it handled poorly. I will take it back to them.
Cheers,
Tony

Oh well then, time to push it with TJM. Don't forget to tell them you've got an Exploroz community waiting to hear the outcome.

Best of luck.
