Just completed a run out to Steep Pt and found the road in from the highway very easy and we were able to maintain speeds of 100kph most of the time if you are sensible. However when the road reaches
the junction for the Useless Loop road to the salt farm things change and the road starts to deteriorate. You then arrive at the T-
intersection where left will take you to
False Entrance and right will take you to Steep Pt. From here the road the becomes a track and then commences a climb through the
sand dunes. We were travelling after the area received some light rain the night before and we found the dunes easy going. The
Ranger is very particular about tyre pressure with numerous signs about even threatening penalties for over pressure. Given the track is corrugated you would be silly not to drop the pressures to smooth the ride out. Take care on the crests of the dunes for oncoming traffic as the track is narrow in
places. The locals at
Denham said that it would take 10-12 hrs to complete the run there an back, we did it in half that but it depends on what you want to see I guess. The scenery is quite spectacular and keep an eye out for whales, dolphins, rays etc as you check out the
views on the run south down to
False Entrance on the open side. All in all not a particularly taxing 4WD track but the scenery is very pretty and the fishing is good.
