Hi all,
I am looking at a 4.8 patrol for work use where my fuel gets paid for.
What sort of economy can you expect around town or highway? Does it change? Just want to know if they are as reliable as the 4.2 diesel. Has anyone done or does anyone know anyone that has done more than 200,000k's in one?
Want to set one up for touring, but for work use as
well.
Cheers,
Chris.

G'day Vicar,
I have a friend that has converted his 4.8 2006 to VSI Gas Injection....cost him $4500 less $3000 in Gov rebates (an extra $1000 in WA).
He has told me that he has felt no loss in power, and gas usage has so far proven to be at the same rate as his petrol usage.
He is very happy so far, but has only had it in for just over 6 months so not too many kays to date.
Good Luck,
Brett.....

I have had a 4.8 auto for 6 years , but have only done 135,000 kms. I did not have any claims under warranty and have only had to replace a steering dampener twice. The car is normal weekly transport and I love the power and handling, but not the fuel consumption. However, I only pay the fuel bill on holidays as company pays the rest, so i don not find that a problem.
I would buy again, though a diesel would give better range and save buying a long range
tank.
Hope that helps.

Hi Chris
Have driven both a bit and own a 4800 now.
I don't think there is any significant difference between them in reliability.
Choose a manual here and it has 173,000 on it now.
Driven conservatively mines overall fuel use has been 16.5 lt/100km with lots of off-road and some towing , as it has a long range
tank and can has a 1000km range I have never been motivated enough to go gas even though it is a lot cheaper here in victoria.
The 4.2 and 4800 cost about the same to run overall (when you include depreciation).
We needed the power and there is a massive difference between the 2.
If you seriously look at a 4.2 for touring the main thing you need to be happy with is NVH , the new one we had, had a resonant drone in the 90-110kmh range and my wife could not put up with that. Several friends I have have them and don't mind the noise and all have had them re-tuned with larger exhausts and are very happy.
There have been mixed reports about the 4800 reliability on gas , and I know of at least one that has had valve recession problems ,but overall I believe the engine is more suited to gas than the equivalent cruiser engine.

I have a 4.5 GU on gas for 300,000 and it has been brilliant. 4.8 is an entirely different engine and has a number of issues with the head. I would love to update but the valve
seat recession issue is just too expensive for me. A neighbour of
mine has one on gas and it failed at 135000k. The bill was $3500. A lubricator eg. Flash Lube may help but there are no guarantees. They are thirsty no matter what you run them on. The alternative is the 4.2 Diesel but not available in auto. Wife cant drive manual? How to get home from the club or pub?
