Hello..Am having difficulties trying to work out how to fit the antennae coaxial cable to the plug that screws into the back of the radio.
The coaxial cable has multi strand wire in the middle and around the outside some sort of flex wires.
Am not sure how to secure the cable to the plug. Do I just cut the outside cable and peel back the flex wires and screw the cable into the plug?
Would appreciate any help. Am in
Southport....Many thanks...

cut the coax so you have a clean cut end, strip the outer cable about 1 inch from the end.then you should have the fine wires exposed, these are called the shield.fold them back or snip them off( if these come in contact with the main wire they wiil short your radio out) then solder your middle copper cable up inside your end that screws to your radio

I take it from that explanation that the shield does not have to be (and cannot) be connected at either the radio or antenna end.
My cable has disconnected from the antenna end - is it just a matter of re-soldering the main wire to the antenna, making sure the shield is out of the way and not connected in any way?
Thanks.

it will short out and bleep your set if you try to transmit if it is touching the main wire, cheers.

The shield does need to be connected at bothe ends. Just not connected to the center conductor.
A good picture
The shield needs to be connected at both ends, it may work with out it, as both ends may be grounded, but with a ground independent antenna, you will most likely have problems.
Cheers

Why go to the trouble of using coax if you dont connect the shield properly.

Hi Con,
Once you've got it up & running lets us know what you think of the unit and its performance.
Which antenna are you installing?
I am looking at purchasing one within the next couple of weeks.
Regards
CraigB

Hi all,
Thank you very much for the advices. The unit is now installed with the GME AE4705 1.2mtr antenna and using the bonus pack handheld 3 watt, I tested it in the surburbs and could communicate up to 1 km although with some static as expected.
Am happy with the unit although it took me 2 whole days just figuring out how to installed it. It was a learning experience.
Thanks again all.
