Hi there, I am looking to buy something safe for the family with 7/8 seats, but that is also ok for some 4wding e.g
Gibb River Rd. I am considering a prado (2004) turbo diesel, with traction control and side airbags for the kids. Other options are a 100 series landcruiser but I think this is a bit of overkill for the ratio of off road we will be doing, and they don't have the side airbags. Any advice about the above or suggestions for other options. Looking to spend $30-40 k. Cheers, Tim.

Prado's are a very capable vehicle and a good purchase choice.

When did Prado start fitting side/curtain airbags and traction control?

2003 or 2004. Both the grande or KZJ120R VX.

When it comes to saftey Getmethehelloutahere there are others factor that are more important, the prime one being rollover stability or static stability factor(SSF).
The lancruiser is a significantly better choice from the cars you have mentioned.

Thanks.
I thought the traction control would help with roll overs. The side airbags help protect in case of roll over and impact with poles etc. What's a 4wd with reasonable stability? I guess it is hard to get a car that suits all purposes?

I agree its hard to get a car that suits all purposes Getmethehelloutahere.
I have never found one yet and the Prado has a number of features that make it a great car , particularly the latter 127kw 3 lt diesel.
The GU patrol wins in the tilt table tests , and while traction control can help at speed , its doesn't help when the car is in the ruts with significant side slopes.
Rear loading up high and rasing the
suspension makes the problem worse. It would seem that in your case you might have the flexibility to rather lower the car or take other actions to increase its track width or keep weight down low and inboard of the axles.
These was also a recent post on this site with a couple of owners believeing that it (traction control) may have contributed to loss of control when towing.

For the type of driving described by Getmethehelloutahere I think the Traction control and stability control and airbags would offer more safety than most GU's. Only the top ones even offer ABS and a reasonable number of airbags. Granted that's not everything but you would be hard pushed to suggest that the Prado ( VX plus) is anything other than a first class 4wd for mixed use safety.

Hi BooBook2
That would be a question that would be hard for us to answer with the available facts and figures.
When I first saw this question, I thought that with little 4wding he might be better off with some of the better family sedans.
In the area I've tended to concentrate in I have witnessed the effects of ABS on a GU (they roll
well) and when I came to getting one I waited months to ensure I got a car without
ABS.
Safety features are improving all the time, and it looks the the next Prado will finally have shaken off its narrow/tall image.
Personally I prefer primary safety over secondary measures , however I accept that the VX plus you refer to is certainly a significant step up on the base models.
I think we could all make better judgements if things like SSF figures were mandatory in Australia as they are in USA.
