Howdy all, got redbacks living in my exterior mirrors, a huntsman occasionaly sets his web across my rear door and this afternoon noticed the biggest wolf spider i have ever seen setting up
camp under my dash.
All these fellas dont bother me at all, if their happy to stay where they are, Im happy to ferry them around.
Its my work vehicle and its carrying round a years supply of newspapers, old pie and sausage roll wrappers, empty iced coffee cartons not to mention 163 ciggy packs.
Theres stuff growing around the passenger
seat Im too scared to touch.....LOL.
Google Wolf Spiders and now know everything about them except what their favourite diet is.
Can anyone help please.
Cheers.....Lionel.

Apparently their venom is not lethal but their bite is supposed to be nasty.
Not aggressive by nature but will attack if provoked.

Wolf Spiders are from the Lycosidae family, which generally feed on insects, although some larger wolf spiders may feed on small vertebrates (animals with backbones)

Thanks Brad, dont know the Lycosidae mob.
Do they set webs or just hang round ready to pounce on any passing dog, cat, rabbit or bullock.
Cheers.....Lionel.

The reference book i have here says that: all species are ground dwellers, making their holes in the ground or living in the leaf litter layer in the garden. Moves rapidly when disturbed. Not aggressive.
Hope this helps
Cheers, Brad

I belive that wolf spiders a very cunning.
Especially the vehicle living variety.
They wait until summer time when the other occupants of the vehicle are wearing shorts. Then, without being noticed, they enter thru the drivers shorts and dine away on.........

in credable things. i saw one on the floor so i picked up a grasshopper and walked over top and and threw the grasshopper in its direction. As soon as i moved my hand it started running. i thought id scared it but no it had watched everything including the movement of my hand and had estimated where the hopper would land so it was where it landed and whammo pounced on it straighaway
Did you know they carry their babies on their back??

I would imagine that if you took the time and effort to clean the vehicle out you would not have to worry about what they eat...they and the other assorted little passengers would not be there...they like like areas like that....cheers ..wtic

Hi Troll, got to admit I was the same.
Pretty fearsome creatures, and many died under my boot.
As the years have gone by I seem to have developed a more 'live and let live' attitude to life and with a little research, as in this case, have realised that not all these creatures have a mission to destroy human life.
The beauty with 4x4 travel is that you become more aware of things such as wildlife, forna, flora and the sometimes fragile enironment we live in and have to share with other critters.
Having said that, Ive learned to watch where I step, stand, sit and sleep out there.
I respect their territory when Im out there and I expect them to do the same when in
mine.
Cheers......Lionel.

Dont mind spiders at all,but NOT IN THE CAR!!!
Possible scenarios regarding the loss of attention to the road if one makes itself known suddenly are scarey to think about.
My missus was out in the family car a few years ago. 7.5 months pregnant with a big bump and a huntsman dropped off the visor onto her tummy. She shooed it away but not out of the car.My driveway drops away quite steeply from the road. I heard the car coming up the hil and went to see what the noise was about. It's the only time I've ever seen under the front wheels of a moving magna as it came over the crest of the drive.

They love moths ,especialy
young bogong moths in feb-march where they hide in cool
rock caves and inside shady alcoves.
Interesting to watch as most spiders are trappers yet the wolf
spider is a hunter in the true sense.
imagine many 100 moths in a
cave then a wolf
spider mosie's on in to devour quite a few unbeknownst to the moth next to them.
nasty
