My 60l Engel fridge has developed an annoying knock when traveling over bumps. On inspection it seems that the compressor has come loose inside the compressor houseing.
It still seems to work ok.
Has anybody had this prpblem & how difficult/expensive was it to fix

Hi burnsy

How old is your fridge? I've got an old (early 80's) 29lt Engel that was a hand -me-down from the father inlaw when he passed away. We have used it for various trips over the years and it also developed a knock when going over a fairly sharp bump. I took the back off but could'nt see anything obvious so we just kept on using it. This fridge did a trip down the CSR about 10 years ago being used as a freezer with a later Engel 39lt as a fridge. It never missed a beat despite some knocking going over the corrugations up near the well numbers in the 30's. I would also love to know what the knock is all about as it has'nt (so far) caused any dramas.

Cheers Pop

Hi Burnsy
It sound like you need a replacement set of compressor mounting rubbers that are obtainable from any Engel dealer and swap them yourself
Mine gave a metallic knocking sound before I replaced them

I had an early 39L which rattled on rough roads. The guts of the compressor is suspended in the cylindrical container by a spring at each end, with not much clearance between the compressor and the wall of the cylinder. On rough roads, the compressor can shake and hit the inside wall of the container. Doesn't seem to cause any problems, just noisy.

My 60l engel developed the same noise you are describing on my cape york trip in 2006. I have spoken to an engel repairer and they said it was a common problem and that it would not affect the units operation. They also said it could be repaired for around $600 and that more often than not the noise ccould develop and return again.

I fixed it by putting the fridge in the camper trailer where I can't hear it and bought a 32litre ($650) waeco fridge to have in the car.

As mentioned its a common problem, Engel also told me that the operation of the fridge would not be affected.
I have a 4 year old 60L Engel and have had the problem since new. 2 new compressors have been fitted under warranty and the problem is still there although not as bad.
The fridge works OK and I have given up on fixing the problem.

From all your comments I think that I will have to put up with the bumps.
Thanks all that helped.
