15:02 11Nov08 AAP-Simpson Desert to close every summer
By Larine Statham

ADELAIDE, Nov 11 AAP - The Simpson Desert will be closed for the first time thissummer because of the danger posed by extreme temperatures.

South Australia's Department of Environment and Heritage today announced theannual December 1 to March 15 closure, saying a risk assessment showedtemperatures of 40 to 50 degrees celsius were dangerous for people crossing thedesert.
The closure will take effect in the Simpson Desert Conservation Park andRegional Reserve, covering an area of more than 3.6 million hectares.

Department regional operations director Trevor Naismith said it was unfortunatethe area had to be closed, but it was necessary to prevent deaths and to ensurethe health of visitors and emergency staff.

"There's been a number of near misses and we have had deaths in past years inthe northern parts of South Australia in relation to overseas tourists who arenot experienced and are ill-prepared for the conditions," Mr Naismith said.

"The Simpson Desert is one of the most fascinating, majestic places inAustralia, but in the middle of summer it's also one of the harshest and theleast hospitable areas, and potentially one of the most unforgiving, dangerousplaces.

"So, we're really keen to facilitate a commonsense approach."
Mr Naismith said high temperatures lead to an increased risk of vehiclefailure.

"This high risk also extends to emergency personnel who are called out to helpstranded visitors."

Tourism outlets and visitor information centres have been informed of theclosure and new entry information signs are being installed at all parkentrances.

People caught by park rangers crossing the desert will face fines of up to$1,000.

And how is such a closure going to be implemented /policed , almost impossible is it not ,, what ,a fence all the way round ? bit like the "supposed"banning of trailers , last time I looked we still live in a country that enjoys freedom of choice ,something like going into the Simpson in high summer may not be the smartest or safest/environmentally correct thing to do but we still have that freedom to be stupid if we are so inclined.

I would assume (and that's a dangerous thing to do, isn't it?!! haha) that they will simply do the same thing they do after rain. They have these dirty great signs that say "ROAD CLOSED".

Nothing there physically to stop idiots going beyond the "ROAD CLOSED" sign/s, but woe-betide those who do.

I am led to believe that there is a fine of $1,000- per wheel for anybody who is caught disobeying a "ROAD CLOSED" sign up in that part of the world. I have only experienced those signs after rain...... it would have been easy to just drive past such a sign and I might have been lucky enough to get through undetected and unscathed. BUT, if you went through one of those signs and got into a lick of strife, I don't reckon you'd be too favourably looked upon by anybody.

Cheers

thats rite $1000 per tyre that includes trailer & spares & extra tyre cases so a car/ trailer/ 3 spares = $9000 expensive desision if you get caught

a couple of years ago at the outback challenge when it was cut 3 days short from the flooding we were told this info by the station owners & also the organisers ,we could not leave the propertys until the roads were open. thats the only proof i have & no one
there was game enough to test this or disrespectfull enough to distroy there roads

Axel (the real one)...... (BTW, is there another?).......hahaha

Anyway Axel, I don't know anybody that has ever been fined under this "law" (if it even exists). I did say "I am led to believe........" NOT that I was certain.

I have heard it on several occasions from people who should know; eg: the publican at the Birdsville Hotel several years ago. Of course, it could just be a method of trying to stop people from doing something they probably shouldn't do.

I guess if it's a real law, then it should be gazetted somewhere in the law books etc.

I, for one, am not about to put it to the test.

Technically, most people in a 4x4 with trailer are probably breaking the law anyway......... after rain and subsequent road closure, the sign is usually changed from "CLOSED" to "OPEN TO 4WD UNDER 3 TONNE"...... Most rigs would be over 3 tonne..... so; breaking the law by travelling. I know I've been guilty of this, but haven't been caught. ;-)
