Howdy All ; Could anyone offer any good info regarding fitting of a Thermo Fan onto the top of the Intercooler of my 2004 GU 3 Litre Patrol. I would like to wire it into the ignition with a relay, and run it full time. Mounting and wireing info much Appreciated / Thankyou

Hi Greg,
Not necessarily the answer, but maybe a a thought to ponder.
Depending on what you want to achieve, the fan may or may not do much for you. I think at low road speeds you might get a beneficial effect by forcing additional air over the intercooler, however at higher road speeds the restriction caused by the bulk of the fan in the path of incoming (road speed) forced air could
well negate any benificial effect or even cause a restriction over the standard set-up.
As noted just a thought, it'll be interesting to see what others suggest.
Rgds,
Rob.

Rob,
I am no expert on the matter, but it was bought to my attention that at highway speed with a bullbar fitted there is very little air flow through the bonnet scoop, due to the bullbar disrupting the flow over the bonnet. Just something to keep in mind. Once anything is fitted to the front of a vehicle, the air flow is anything but what it was in the factory under test conditions.
At least with the fan fitted you have no doubt that air is being forcecd through the cooller.

Yes, the Patrol
forum will be your best bet. I know a number of the blokes on there have done this mod to their 3 litre but have used a heat-activated switch (50oC I think) to activate the fan. After all, there's no point having the fan running full time if it's not needed.

The 2.8 GU has a fan under the intercooler to suck air through. Maybe that is worth looking at. I believe the 3.0 and 2.8 intercooler are the same size or very similar

Gooday Greg,
the intercoolers on the Patrols are next to useless. Lift up the bonnet and feel the tempmerature of the intercooler body after a run at 100 kph. You'll be very surprised at how hot it is. At lower speeds it acts as a heat sink. I fitted a fan and it is absolutely remarkable how cool the intercooler stays (almost ambient temperature at both highway driving and low speed rock crawling or sand driving)
