In 2006/7 we planned to do a trip from
Licola to the Howitt Rd, along the Butcher Country Tk. Alas the fires intervened. I would like to know from anyone who has been up that way this year what it is now like.
In particular how badly was it burnt? Some parts of the high country (e.g. some of the lower-altitude silvertop forest) have recovered
well, but others seem full of dead old snow gums (with 2m regrowth). What's it like on Butcher Country?

Des,
The last time that I went past the Butcher Country Tk on the Howitt rd, it had just been reopened. That was in April this year.
The tracks have just open so a check with Vic Parks might be the way to go.

I went from north to south last weekend. It is starting to recover. As is the case with much of the high country there are parts that are completely dead, especilly up the top at the north end, but in the main there is green regrowth on most of the bush. In the main it is a great drive. We camped down on the Mccalistair, there was tons of rain that Friday and some nice muddy bits up top.
