Hi All,
Just about to go across the Nullarbor and checked out the fuel prices in Explore Oz but notice that they hasn't been updated for weeks. Can anyone give an insight as to the cheapest place to refill as there is approx 1200klm across. We have a 1000klm range and may have to just buy enough to get to
Ceduna and then refill. Heard that it can be up to 40c per litre dearer in the middle than at
Ceduna.
Thanks in advance
Goona

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for your reply. I heard that this fuel stop has SAF fuel and is not as good as the normal fuel. Do you know if this is the case?

Yes Goona, it is SAF fuel, but I have used it and had no trouble.
Geoff.

While there are other variables, strangely enough, each time we have got less kms per litre from the
Mundrabilla fuel.

MH,
maybe it's because after you leave
Mundrabilla, in either direction, you've got a
tank emptying
hill to climb, dragging your van behind you.
There's usually a significant headwind heading west on the flats as
well.
Last crossing we got 30 litres per 100ks punching a cold front.
cheers

Yep, in the middle,
Mundrabilla. But at the
Ceduna end,
Penong and
Nundroo are same price as
Ceduna. Lots of trucks fill at
Caltex Penong.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the reply. As I have asked Geoff do you know what SAF fuel is is it as good as normal fuel? Good new re
Penong as I will just add a bit to get me to there.

Penong is my normal fuel fill up point - good
Caltex stuff and very high turnover of diesel at a good price.
Nundroo is an extra 75km west of
penong, and it is SAFF. Their diesel contains up to 10% biodiesel, which won't matter, but if you're like me, you might just get a splash there if required.
I'm not a fan of biodiesel, but have not heard of any probs with SAFF diesel.

We crossed the paddock in July and did a bit of homework here and elsewhere on fuel pricing. As you have seen, some
places in the middle have a horrendous reputation - deserved on our observations it would seem - at
Norseman, look for the Shell servo in the middle of town - cheaper than all the others - there is a
sign out the front that says so :-o).

For years the
Caltex in the middle of
Norseman used to be the cheapest, and the BP on the east entrance the dearest, but this year, this has varied fom time to time. Check on fuel watch for the latest prices in
Norseman to see the current trend. Today it is
Caltex, then Shell then BP as it used to be.

We travelled the Nullarbor last month and the dearest fuel was at the
Border Crossing now a
BP servo. It was around the $2:11 per litre for diesel from memory, a total rip off. Just put enough in to get to
Penong
Fuel at
Penong was the cheapest we experienced.
Norsman the BP was only a 0.7cent dearer than the two in the town. It is worth checking before refueling.
Just as a note: we noticed LPG was a bit scarce along the way with signs on some pumps

Also fuel is cheaper at
Eucla than at Border Village.

SAFF diesel is 5% bio. I've used it in my TDV8 Cruiser trayback without any probs at all.
Outlets in
Ceduna vary a bit, just find the most convenient there.
From your direction, east to west,
Penong,
Nundroo are good prices.
Yalata has been closed for ages; nothing there.
Eucla and
Mundrabilla are the same but
Mundrabilla has far easier access to the bowser.
There's a great freecamp spot 13 kays west of
Mundrabilla on the RHS.
Avoid
Caiguna and Balladonia. Very expensive.
Shell and
Caltex in
Norseman are cheapest but only by a whisker. If you are towing Shell can be a little squeazy but it's OK.
Try the
unsealed road from
Norseman to
Hyden, it's pretty good.
cheers and don't bring any cane toads with you lol.

Goona, Also never run to near empty along the way. We were caught once as when we go to
Mundrabilla, they had been waiting for overdue supplies of diesel for two days, and were allowing 20 litres per vehicle for those who were really short to get to Madura. What a queue at Madura and what a price! It would have been cheaper to go back to
Eucla. We got only enough to get to
Norseman, but hadn't factored in the effect on the hills approaching
Norseman when towing a newly purchased heavy caravan. We were so close to empty when we got to the
Caltex. Not worth the stress over a few dollars.
Although
Penong is usually cheaper than
Ceduna, we usually fill up at
Ceduna BP and know we have got it, and shower there for $3 each (unlimited hot shower) before heading across the Nullabor.
Last time we went through (2006)
Eucla was similar price to
Mundrabilla, and some of the others, such as
Caiguna and Cocklebiddy, were giving out 'discount vouchers' to compete.
