ribman's thread (6519) got me thinking about changing the tyre size on my new jayco dove outback.
they came with 15" & I also want to change them to 17" to match the prado.
whilst the width of the prado tyres, 265, will not fit the dove, but 235 will probably make it. @ least then I will have an extra spare.
my email to jayco to query and changes in dynamics, has not been answered, surprise, surprise.
has any member, out there, done this type of change. ???
cheers Tom

I have put 265/70 on the expanda. It came with the 235 15's and they fitted fine. Ok they are a bit wider but dont protrude beyond the flare things on the van. Do the 17's of the prado hit the van chassis? If they do I think you can get a spacer thing.

Thanks AJB.
I thought someone may have done this.
I looked @ the jayco
forum & the last entry for this query was back on 2007.
I'll get the spare off the prado this weekend & see if it fits.
cheers Tom

Gidday Tom. We own a very old Jayco Swan which in 1979 came with Holden 13 inch rims and Mighty Rib tyres which lasted 30,000km until the
Mereenie Loop Rd finished them off in 1999. In 2005 I put 14 inch rims on and 195 tyres and did 20,000km in 10 weeks including the GRR which took out a tyre after 10,000. This year we went to the Cape, doing 11,000 and the tyres have had it. So I got new van brake drums and bearings for $90 each, with 6 studs to take a 245/70 tyre on a 16 inch rim. These match my Pathfinder.
Had to lift the metal mudguards by an inch so the tyres would fit and have done 1,000 km trip on tar with no problems. Struck some mud at Coolah Tops but did not clog up. The smallest clearance is between the front of the tyre and step at less than an inch but the wheel can't move foward. Hope this helps, Glenn

I had a go at this last year and am happy with the outcome.
I bought a 2003 GX Prado that came std with 225s on a 6inch rim. For our outback trip I replaced the rims and tyres wth 17x8 steels and STTs in 245/70-17. (These tyres are 777mm in diameter which is very close to the std tyres on the GXL model.)
I wanted to fit the 17x8 and STTs on the Dove Outback. Use the same tyres all around etc. The problem was the steel rims have a 30mm offset. When I fitted the them on the Dove the inside of the tyre was touching on bolts that hold the anti bounce springs on the leaf springs.
To fix this I did two changes. One was to fit 10mm spacers (I couldn't buy any in 10 mm so made them up myself). The second was to turn down in a lathe the bolt heads that hold the anti bounce things on the leaf springs. Managed to get enough clearance to use the same tyres as the Prado.

G'day Tom,
I have fitted 265/75 16's on GU Patrol Alloys to my Eagle Outback.
No rubbing.
Wanted to go larger with matching tyres to the Patrol at 285/75 16 but they rubbed on the Simplicity
Suspension bolt (had this factory fitted).
Handles sand much better than the tiny wheels that it came with ....floats easier. Wheel track centre is the same, but now has a wider foot print.
Seems to sit a little more steady on the road for some reason.
You may have to watch the Prado's offset rim which may make you stick with a 235.
Good Luck.
Brett....

Hi Tom,
I also changed
mine to 265/75 16" on Sunraysia Rims on my Eagle. We met up with Brett just outside Geralton and I would have to agree with him just watch the Prado offset, or either buy some spacers for prado rims of just get some 16" on sunraysia rims with suitable offset.
As Brett says they whole rig is more stable with the bigger rubber.
Have Fun

IMO IF the Dove has 31x10.5x15s your Prado standard tyres are almost the same outside diameter, but the 15s will hold a lot more compressible air which may affect the Doves ride ability.
