Cheers Kev

We were in Birdsville in 1999 when he did his last mail run.
I did a little piece in the original "Beach & Beyond" travel journal that was copied to ExplorOz when we launched it and is still available in its new guise in my blog - September 1999 blog Birdsville

Unfortunately it doesn't contain one of the great photos I took - so give me a moment to dig it up, it is off Tom in this reconditioned Badger. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll get out the old photo album, scan the pic, and upload it here.

Bring it on Michelle!
I can't wait for Sunday.. Seriously I have to take tissues. The man has just truly touched my heart and I can't really explain it but he has and I am so glad I made the decision to take a week off work and come down to SA for the Bust, I just had to do it. I just know that if I knocked back the invitation to attend the Bust and not meet Tom, I would truly regret it.

Jo,

"I just know that if I knocked back the invitation to attend the Bust and not meet Tom, I would truly regret it."

This is just so great, yep, no logic at all but something that just had to be done.

You'll have that memory to share with generations to come, long after Tom has departed this world.

Enjoy,

Geoff

Hey Geoff...
Yep, can't explain it. It really was just the 'I have to do this'. When I get that I gotta follow it through. I got home from work, walk in the front door and said to Mark, "we are going to Adelaide!" What? Why?. Because we just have to, if you can't come that's fine but I HAVE to go, full stop, end of story.
As it turned out he couldn't come, and he got admitted back to hospital late on the tues arvo, the day before I was to fly out but he knew this was something I had to do so still insisted I go. And obviously I did, and he had lot's of nurses to look after him so he'd be fine!!!

That is the Chev Blitz truck. When the war was over with Tom went and bought a couple of the trucks on behalf of Harry Ding. In the end the Blitz was kept on the other side of Cooper Creek so he had a truck to carry everything up to Birdsville when the floods were happening and he had to ferry everything across the Cooper.
I know the Red Blitz has also been restored but I cannot remember where it is kept. Possibly at Marree.

Spot on Jo, the old one is the all wheel drive Blitz, the one he used for the re-enactment was the Leyland Badger of which you have pictures from the Birdwood Museum.

Tom Kruze and Len Beadell would have to be the last of Australias true great adventurers, and of course Williem.... :-)

Some great pictures of the old Badger and yes indeed old Tom did some mighty work.

Always kind of niggled me a little though while watching the two videos.

Tom was rightly awarded an MBE. And yet who is, or are, the fellows accompanying him in the story Back of Beyond ?

How come the other drivers who did the same thing are rarely, if ever, acknowledged ?

Dave and Monty Scobie, Ken and Allan Crombie, Fred Teague, Tommy Robinson and Max Bowden are just some that I know of who did the Birdsville mail run.

Fred Teague held the record for the fastest trip for awhile. 18 hours to get from Maree to Birdsville and only 12 hours to return.

The trucks outside of the Mungerannie Hotel are part of those legendary days of the track, an AEC, Blitz and one other shell.

Like many legends, history tends be overlooked at times.

Yeh it is funny you should say that Peter, cause as much as Tom did it, I have said on numerous occasions when talking to others about it, 'what about the other guys that have all done the run as well?' They may not have done it for as long as Tom, but they did it and deserve just as much recognition also.

I don't actually know (or recall) why the name on the side of the truck is E.G. Kruse - was it a proper name or family of Tom's? Can anyone enlighten me (and others) on this point?
