Due to family issues our camper trailer has been sitting idle on the drive way for the last 12 months. I'm wondering if sitting unused for this long has had any detrimentall effects on the tyres and bearings. Any thoughts

Shouldn't be a problem but worth checking anyway.

If the bearings were correctly greased and sealed, no problems.

Tyres will flatspot and maybe start sidewall cracking. Flatspotting should fix itself with a long run. Inspect for cracks.

You do not say when the bearings were last checked.

Was it 12 months ago? or the deep forgotten past.

I know if I were going on a long trip I would check the bearings, particularly if it was sitting outside and/or on grass. This is the most common cause of trailer failure.

Tyres should be OK if they are not visibly cracked anywhere on the sidewalls.

Put it up on a couple of stands to prevent any further problems. Michael

CRUZNOZ

you see it around holiday time..............a box/camper/boat trailer sitting on the side of the road, missus sitting under a tree waiting for hubby to come back from nearest town to find help.

WHY ??

trailer sitting in shed/drive way since last outing a year ago,no maintenance on wheel bearings or tyres.

best advice mate is check wheel bearings for movement ( better still, repack them).

cheers & happy camping :-)

Ive always maintained my bearings, Repacking them before any trips. However I havent left the camper sitting for such a long period before and wasnt sure what effect this would have on bearings. Should I replace them or will repacking them be enough.

The only way to be sure about the bearings is to remove and wash them thoroughly then check them for corrosion or pitting where the rollers have been in contact with the cones.

This is a common problem with bearings that have been left undisturbed for long periods, particularly when they have had any weight or pre load on them. Differential reconditioning companies for example that keep exchange units on the shelf for extended periods will usually give the pinions a few turns by hand at regular intervals top prevent this.

The worst offenders for developing flat spots on tyres are cross plies. When they were in common use years ago, you would often hear people say they had put their car "up on blocks" if they were leaving it in storage for an extended period. Flat spots would soon set into the tyres if they left the vehicle's weight on them and they often did not want to work their way out.

Steel radials seem to suffer few if any ill effects from this and I doubt if you will have any problems with yours.

Re replacing vs repacking.
This will be obvious when you have a look at them.
If the outers are shiny and new looking, you can repack.
If they have any rust on them , replace.
If there are no rust marks on the outers then it's odds on that the rollers are OK. Hey they are only about $15 a side anyway.
