I have just Installed
Ubuntu 8.10 Linux on my laptop. I then plugged in my LG TU 500 mobile phone, a dialog box popped up indicating that the phone was plug in and did I want to connect to the internet. The next dialog box had a list of Australian mobile service providers, I'm with Telsta so I select that and I selected what data plan I had, with that selected I was connected to the internet.
So why am I so raped,
well now when we go away I don't need to have any virus protection so don't have all those virus signature updates every time I connect to the internet, no concerns about doing online banking, no defraging the drive, no register that grows and grows every time you install a new program. The best of all its FREE.
You can still keep your Windows as Ubuntu creates a boot menu and from it you can select your Windows distro.
I installed Ubuntu on my old NEC Versa with has a 2.2 GHz processor with a very average video card and I'm still able to have 4 desktops which I can rotate, refer to the videio in
my Blog
If you have any further inquires just PM me and I'll give you my email address.

1/2A,
We knew what you meant, just havent heard of may men admitting to being raped.
On a serious note, I have always wanted to try installing a version of Linux but never got around to it.
Is Ubuntu a freebie and if so, whats the link to download it.
Cheers,
Cruiser .

You can also run Ubuntu from the CD without installing it.
This way you do a test to see if your phone will connect without doing an install.
Ubuntu is often available in computer magazines at the news agents, this will save you doing the download.
When you burn the CD it has to be a disc image also known as a ISO.

Cruiser,
Don't forget you have to burn the CD as an ISO also none as a disk image or it won't boot.

1/2A,
I have a bookable disc and fool around with it when I get the chance.
There are a couple of programs that I have that I need to find alternatives for and then I think I'll jump ship.
There was someone here awhile ago that had in their signature.
'A world without fences and walls, isn't a good as a world without Windows and Gates'
How true is that?
I'll wean myself of Microsoft sooner rather than later.

Jon,
I use Ubuntu 99% of the time, I tried the premium version of Vesta 64 bit to run
Pinnacle for video editing, but found it far slower than running it on XP so I deleted Vista an went back to XP. When ever I'm in XP I turn my modem off, this way I can run XP without any virus protection making XP run better. I also have XP running in a virtual PC
VIrtualBox and also don't run any virus or firewall protection as Ubuntu looks after that side of things, I can run my Garmin software and upload way points to my Garmin, and I can also print to my printer in VirtaulBox

I ask this, cause I'm use too XP and am comfortable with it. Having said that i do what to move away from MS.
Thanks for your help. :)

I have an old desktop P4 with Ubuntu installed and it's great - quicker than XP on my normal desktop which is reasonably new.
To run Windows, I installed Wine. All Windows programs I have tried, including Oziexplorer work perfectly. Very tempted to toss the big W but not quite game enough yet, but then again... maybe...
Cheers

Jon,
When you install Ubuntu on your system it sets up a boot loader called Grub which picks up other operating systems and sets them out in a menu and then you select which one you want to use, but you can have a play with Ubuntu without installing it by booting from the Cd and selecting the first option in the menu when it boots up, every thing works but just a bit slow because its running from the CD and not your hard drive.

Jon,
Another thing I've done, is I use FireFox as my web browser and have installed the Foxmarks plugin, this way it doesn't matter which operating system I'm using the bookmarks are all synchronized, this means that if I'm Ubuntu or Windows I always and the same bookmarks.

Ok, I don't get it....if you always turn your modem off when using XP, how does Foxmarks synchronise your bookmarks?
And why would you need those bookmarks anyway, seeing as you are obviously not connected to the net?
Or am I missing something here?
Cheers
Glenn

1/2A,
Just a quick thank you for the CD which arrived late Friday arvo.
Have tested it and all is good. Was up and running off the CD in less than 5 minutes.
Will dig out my spare 80Gb hard drive later this week and actually do a full standalone installation. It loos like a very stable OS and am looking forward to having a play.
Cheers,
Cruiser .

Hi Cruiser,
That's the best way to install, if you install Virtualbox and require USB support you'll need to install the version from
VirtualBox home page plus there are a few items to configure, but I'll give you a hand those.
I have also posted a lot of info on our
Sunbury PC user site in the Linux forum. have fun you'll love it.

Hi 1/2A
Ive downloaded to a big Athlon cut a disc but only on a CD-R80 not an ISO had a play on a lap top installed with XP .
Started up and ran fine. So far just looking .
The desk top I down loaded to is running Vista business and at least once a day it crashes a USB port and you have to crawl around pulling plugs and reconnecting.
I like your idea of the virtual box for windows so is the one you used Virtual Box for Linux Hosts 2.0.4 or otherwise.
I will install it all on the laptop but not the desktop as Im likely to crash it and there is too much data to lose like 30 Years of genealogy research and over 83000 links persons.
Your advise would be appreciated.
Ian

Hi Ian,
There are two versions of VirtualBox one you can download for the Ubuntu add/remove and the other from the
VirtualBox site the one from the site has USB support and the one for Ubuntu doesn't. When you install on your laptop make sure that when you create the partition for Ubuntu that you don't select use the COMPLETE drive or it will over write your windows.

Hi Ian,
Before you install send me an email and I can step you through the install. I also have Skype out, so I can give you a call at no cost to myself.

I can see how you would limit anti-virus downloads etc by using a Linux system but what about the outrageous costs for mobile data connections from Telstra?
Have you tried using it on a normal/regular basis and looked at the bills?
Aren't the mobile call time and downloading constraints a bit crippling for real internet usage?

I only use my mobile when I'm
on the road and you get 300meg for $29 and I've found this is more than adequate for banking and email. I also drop my home Internet by the same amount.
