I have been looking to buy a steel cage roof rack basket, as I have previously found these a flexible option. However I keep seeing ads for aluminum tray/baskets. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of these?

We use wire baskets exclusively for the following reasons:
- They are light but strong
-They flex. This is extremely important off bitumen as the small amount of give removes some of the stress that rigid roof racks then transfer to the body of the vehicle. We have seen lots of 4WD with racked door frames and C pillars and it is very easy to see the gouges created by overloaded and rigid roof racks which is the prime cause
- They are easy to put on top and remove, remember the wind resistance and subsequent increase in fuel consumpton they cause
- They provide considerably more tie down points than any other form or roof rack
-They are as noisy as the rest, believe me we have tried them all and also been able to compare with our client base
-The are durable. One of ours has lasted 9 years of touring and travel

Thanks RobA. I assume you are talking about the steel baskets, not the Aluminum?

We use the Rhino Rack brand primarily but have a couple of custom made ones as
well but they all follow the same wire size and tensile strength so no real difference.
As for size we go for smaller rather than larger to reduce the temptation to overload them. Our vehicles are all setup with second storage systems to replace the back seats so roof baskets carry only a second spare, gas bottle, jerry cans and a few bits and pieces that are not used regularly. We keep commonly used stuff in the vehicle interior, safely behind two cargo barriers as it saves climbing up and down all the time and lifting things like tents up and down with the subsequent risk of a fall and injury. We also use custom built ladders on the rear wheel which make the climbing a lot easier
Yes steel wire only. The aluminium is not capable of dealing with the flex and loads. That;s not a criticism simply a design characteristic of aluminium
