I've purchased subject USB from ExplorOz and installed it on my 'widescreen' notebook with GPS software. It was working perfectly. Just the operator couldn't get his grey matter into gear. ;-) (and still learning this GPS stuff)

I've decided that notebook is way too big whilst sitting in the front of the car so I bought an ASUS Eec 8" running XP. Installed TrackRanger/UBD software and went to install USB GPS driver only to find that *I* now can't find the driver CD.

I found and downloaded a driver from this site http://www.usglobalsat.com/p-62-bu-353-w.aspx and installed it on the ASUS. Setup the COM port [5] 9600,8,1,0 and established coms with TrackRanger OK.

Problem I now have is the satellites are not registering and GPS can't locate. I'm wondering if the XP 32 bit driver I installed from above site is actually the correct one.

Has me stumped at present .....

Any advice appreciated.

BTW I will be heading for Brisbane on Tuesday for a week so may be out of action for that time.

Malcolm,

I thought that the trackranger program was a single machine registration meaning you can load the program to another computer but the navigation function will not work until it's re registered with trackranger. Why don't you send the boys at Trackranger an email as I've always found them very helpful when I was getting set-up. I'm sure they'd probably have a driver for your gps receiver as well.

Cheers Mick

Thanks Mick

You ARE correct - it *is* single machine software licence.

I intend uninstalling it off my other NB. However, you CAN do multiple installations and it WILL function for 30 days (as trial software).

Not many places available for support at 1500 hrs on Sunday arvo ;-)

I'll give them a call tomorrow. Thanks ...

Mick .... on second thoughts, you may be correct as to why it is not seeing the satellites. Trial Mode Restriction !!

Well that's what I call SERVICE .....

I whipped off an email to TR tech sp guys and they answered it at 2130 hrs. (I didn't see it for an hour or so).

When setting up I was checking my COM port in Device Manager. I saw that COM 5 was set at 9600 so I changed the USB device from 4800 to 9600. That's why it wasn't working !!

I just set it back to 4800 and picked up signals (outside) at about 65% strength. Loaded up UBD Regional Map and set to auto. VOILA !! Working.

They just have to send me a new rego code. I've already unloaded all my map/GPS suff from the other system.

Good on you Malcolm. Ive found Trackranger to be a great program and one I've enjoyed using on my last trip. I've got to do the same as you in that I'd like to load it up on two computers, using one as the back-up. Will have to make some enquiries with the Advantech boys myself.

Cheers Mick

That 'may' constitute two licences. But, hey, give it a try. These guys are very supportive.

I've deleted from my other NB and have no intention of reinstalling it on that one.

These small ASUS Eee PC can also run direct from 12V (cig lighter) but I'm sure you already know that ;-)

Tomorrow we are heading to Brisbane in my wife's Honda Jazz - at least I'll like the fuel figures. At present we get 5.5 litres / 100 km with air con running around town.

Two things I'm trialling:
1. GPS TrackRanger (Already have Navman S50 setup); and

2. OBD 2007 - On Board Diagnostics - Display "Digital Dashboard" whilst travelling. This uses ELM327 OBD II. Apparently all cars after 2006 were to be compliant with this I/F.

I originally started this as project for Nissan but they use a different system (which I'm also talking to the guys in Adelaide to try to get NisTune to work with ZD30 - ONLY for display purposes - so novices (like me) can see what their engine is and isn't doing ;-)

We can take discussion offline if you like.
