we have a trip to the Cobough Peninsular and Gove planned out for 2009, all permits have been secured, 4 vehicles in convoy.
Looking for anybody that can help me with the fill in bits, campsites on way to Gove, water quantities to carry, any places to hire a boat at either destination.
Any advice will be appreciated
Margaret

Margaret,
I dont know whether you are aware that all the facilities at Coberg except the camping area have been closed, which mean no cabins, boat hire, store or fuel. The indigenous owners would not renew the leases last year and nothing happened all year ,you should check after the wet as there is some talk of them being re leased but I wouldn,t hold my breath waiting.
It,s a great spot but you may have to take all your fuel and supplies if nothing happens.

Best of Luck John

Yes, we are aware that the facilities are closed, going in to be self sufficient for the week, have been told not pull a boat in, but hopefully we can shore fish

Hi Margaret
You may have visited this site it gives a little information.

http://www.nt.gov.au/nreta/parks/permits/cobourgpeninsula.html

There is a couple of PDF files to read should give you all the info you need.
We went to Cobourg Peninsular (not Gove) in 2004. We were not allowed to camp anywhere along the way only in the designated camp areas within the National park. There are a couple of camp areas one was for generators. Good size though. Cold shower block and loos. You have to report into the Ranges Office on arrival.
We had one week there, it was fantastic. It was around early August.
Don't remember seeing any boats for hire but that may have changed by now. If you can go on the boat trip over the the Old Victoria Settlement site, it is well worth the trip.

Have a great time up there.

Michelle

Margaret

Have you been able to obtain permits to go from Cobourg to Gove across the top?

Cheers

Almost no hope of a permit to travel the "top track" Willem.
They just won't issue one. Maybe if you know someone?
Made quite clear on the door of the NLC in Gove, "Permits will not be issued for tourist purposes for the top track under any circumstances"

Thanks Lyndon. That is what I thought.

We visited Cobourg in the mid 80's when permits were easily obtainable and inexpensive and restrictions were low and enjoyed our stay there. Some sea-going crocs came a bit too close for comfort though.

In the 70's I was priviledged to go deep into Arnhemland across the headwaters of the Katherine River into some wonderful country. All of that country is very mystical to me.

Cheers

No, we didn't apply for the permit across the top, going to gove and then back to Katherine to replenish stocks before going into Cobourhg and Wiligi Outstation

Hi Margaret
We have just spent aprox 8 + weeks in Arhnem Land. Cobourg & Gove. We are yet to write and post a report on EO of our experiences.
You can write to us @ lyndonkain@bigpond.com
0408 068 156 ph arvo's only please
It is a fantastic spot with almost no other tourists but it does have it's downsides. Doesn't it Chris? :)
Forget the boat in Cobourg, take a cast net to catch bait, learn how to use it first and you can catch all the fish you want off the beach.
Re Gove, i hope none of you have metalic paint!!!!
How long have you allowed for your trip?
Regards Lyndon & Bernadette

Having spent time in both places, I would allow more time in Gove than Cobough. In fact Iwas a bit dissapointed in Cobough as there were too many restrictions on where you could go.As said, I don't think you will get a permit to go across the top as Ialso was told that it would only be issued if you knew someone who you wanted to visit. There is a nice drive and plenty of camp spots if you drive out onto the beach and up to Cape Arnhem, just remember to let those tyres down.
