fridges

Hello all, trying to choose a new 60 litre 12v/240v fridge for a new camper trailer. I have had a 40 litre Engel for several yrs with no problems. Was wondering if anyone has any news on the Autofridge or the National Luna fridges. I will have a battery system in the trailer and also have a Honda Gen. to carry if required but would still want efficient fridge. Lokk forward to your responses

Agreed..........mine is 10 years old and going strong. Runs 24/7 at home as beer fridge as well.

You will find that most of the companies that flog solar stuff seriously recommend and/or sell these fridges.

I find my 39l very efficient, robust, easy to clean. The only problem with it is that it has become too small with a growing family!

The Autofridge 73l is what you want.

One caution is to use it as much as you can and NOT leave it idle for months on end. Apparently the seals dry out and they are very expensive to repair.

Cheers,

Mark

Why not look at a Trailblazer, Aussie made, used by the red cross and the Australian army. I have one and it has never played up.

have a good one

Rocky

They would have to be the best fridge on the market without a doubt. A bit bulky due to the fact they are so well insulated 75mm styrene and covered with marine grade aluminium outer and inner. We have been away camping with friends who have Engels, Waeco's etc and they are good fridges, alot prettier to look at than a Trailblaza, but no where as effient with electricity.

We used to watch a friend of ours with an Engel set the temp. in the morning to a lower setting, then switch it back in the evening.
Got on the grog one day camped, came evening, forgot to change the temp. setting back and inthe morning everything inside was as hard as a rock, blown out and split cans of beer, eggs like rocks, one hell of a mess. Yes they do work!!

I think why there as quite not as many Trailblaza's seen everyday is only because you cannot walk into an plastics and crap 4x4 retailer and purchase one off the shelf, they have to be ordered from the private manufacturer in Caloundra. A very good product.

Think about it, If you were going to buy an air conditioning system for your home, would you buy one that came with a blanket to chuck over your house so that it would work better in a heat wave ?

Nicky,
you all should be chastised for allowing your beers to freeze, that would bring me to tears.

Have a good one.

I don't know why he would have to keep altering his Engel settings, we have done thousands of kms through the Outback & have never had to adjust it, even leaving it locked in the vehicle in full sun for hours, when we got back the temp was still on 2 degrees.

Trailblazer seems a good fridge,,,, however,,,, gotta agree with Shaker above here,,,,

Having to change settings on an Engel is a crock of ,,,,

I too have 40ltr Engel, has to be the best, most robust and reliable piece of camping kit I have.

I like my beer, crisp cold, so my Engel sits on 1 degree, and it will hold that regardless of ambient, it just cycles more or less dependent on ambient, but I NEVER HAVE TO ALTER SETTINGS.

just my 10cents

Was at the Perth 4WD show today and saw the Bushman fridge/freezer. As a novice to portable fridge/freezers, I was fairly impressed by this setup. While the base size is 35ltr, a "high top" lid and 10ltr extension collar increases the capacity to 52ltrs.

Although it doesn't have switchable voltage (ie, 12/240V), it can take 12-24VDC and has an optional 240VAC power pack transformer.

I particularly liked the push button temperature setting in 1deg steps with inbuilt temp gauge.

Their website gives a good rundown on this unit.

I have had engle 39l, Waeco 50l ( which I still have) and a 74l National Luna.

The National Luna is a mile apart from the other rwo in terms of materials, construction and electronics.

The 74l only uses about 1.3A on average when freezing half the fridge and about 1.1A as fridge only!!. The insulation is about 50mm which does make it bigger but it saves battteries. Also it automatically goes to turbo mode when you start the vehicle ( over 13V or something).

The 74 l is a 2 compartment with seperate controls for each section ( but only one compressor) and is a brilliant fridge.

Upsides.

Sits right on the temp you select ( unlike both waeco and engle)
Very low current draw
unbreakable
smart electronics
Danfoss ( easy to find repairer)
Stainless steel insides with no cooling fins in the way
Easy to clean
Will get to and stay at -18c in 45 degrees
Willl get cold quickly ( it still amaizes me how quick it is compared to the other 2)
Controls are accurate and easy whn you get used to them
You can have fridge/fridge,fridge/freezer,freezer/freezer,fridge/off ( on 74l model)

Downsides
Expensive ( but worth it IMHO)
Heavy

The WHO apparently uses them for transporting medicine in 3rd world countries so they have probably been tested thoroughly.

I love it.

I have a 60litre waeco and it has generally functioned ok. The only thing I don't like about it is the depth of it. They are are relatively high and you often find the things in the bottom get lost and forgotten about.

I have just purchased an Engel 60litre, at an amazing price thanks to massive discounts at rays outdoors at Broadmeadow in Newcastle. I saved near $500 on the normal retail price.

I like it because I can see what I have in the fridge. It has not had a full on trip yet but I don't think I will go wrong with it.

Now what to do with the Waeco??
