Hello Everyone
I am looking to find a monitor / screen / radio / CD Player that will fit into my car radio space (GU Patrol) that I can view maps etc and still play music etc.
I have just bought a Hema Navigator with the 4wd tacks in it which I am about to use in Tasmania soon. I am not adversed to mounting a laptop in the cabin and having a display that I can use.
I am new to this type of navigation except using maps and for Chart Plotters and Navigators in boats and trying to get away from the small windscreen mounted gadget units.

Can you point me in the right direction and give me some advice and what is available on the market and the best mapping software / system to use. Regards John

Not quite what you are after, however...

VGA TFT Touch Screen from Jaycar and mounted with a DIN wedge. OEM radio/CD player sits in its original position behind the screen and the screen folds down so you can access the radio controls. The laptop sits behind the drivers seat and runs Oziexplorer via a Garmin GPS (engine).

Thanks Craig
That is exactly the type of setup I am looking for. Is it possible to have an external GPS aerial like a boat and feed the data straight into the laptop. Regards John

Gidday Skippy. The screen is held up by a DIN 'Wedge Mount', the gooseneck you are referring to are the cables to the screen.

John M....the GPS out put feeds directly into the laptop, then laptop to screen. I am using an external aerial that just sits on the dash mat with velcro. Haven't had a problem in two years running this set-up.

Cheers.

John,

You can get a mouse GPS which is a small device on a USB cable that plugs directly into the laptop. I use this most of the time - they are magnetic backed so you can put them on the roof or bonnet when you are travelling and them just move them into the car when you are in towns and security may be a concern. Have a look here in the ExplorOz shop for the Mouse GPS.

Hi again Skippy, hows that Velcro I got you holding up?

The Din Wedge Mount was bought from an Australian on-line store, of which I am unable to recall (search for DIN wedge mount). The mount is made from quite heavy steel and rather expensive at about $77 from memory. The mounted screen is able to be tilted but not swivelled, and has never moved in the two years I have had it installed.

Best regards,

Hi Craig,

The Velcro has worked well until I got sick of the 8" screen blocking my view , thats why i'm looking for another way in holding up the screen. I also found the screen that I brought was too bright during the day and far too bright at night the adjustments weren't good

I did a search on Google and sort of come up with a store so I'll need to investigate more

You could also look at the VMS, google them up and all details will be revealed. It is a complete satnav system including HEMA off road maps. In fact, VMS make the Hema Navigator I believe. It is fully itegrated and includes al the other bits, radio/CD player/iPod connection/rear view camera option. Being a double DIN unit it will fit the Patrol and replace the existing radio unit and look as though it was factory fitted instead of added on.

Thanks Don, I contacted VMS in Melbourne yesterday after your post and they advised the details about the unit. It does everything that I am looking for and at $2595.00.

The AVNC 3000 model has all the Hema maps in it but I am not sure yet if it has the ability to add maps or details and information to the maps. Regards John

John,

All the mapping (including Route 66 street nav) is on an SD card so you can easily add updates or other mapping.

I am looking for something with a larger screen, so I have opted for a 10" VGA screen and will use my laptop and this seems to give a larger scope of mapping. I have a Hema Navigator and can download the maps from the SD card onto Oziexplorer software. Regards John

Thanks Troll, that seems to be the best and most popular setup and gives the best flexability for a good size display and plenty of memory. I have a good laptop, the Hema maps and looking at ebay for VGA screens at only about $250 - $300 it seems to be the most economical setup. I wish I researched this better before I bought the Hema Navigator. Michaels post on the mouse GPS is good and this is a small compact device. So I think this is the setup I will install. Do you have or require any filters for the power supply for the laptop and are you powering it through an invertor or just using 12vdc supply straight from the Patrol. Do you run Oziexplorer software and is there any other good compatible software that is recommended. Regards John

John,

The actual unit has TV/av1-av3 input and then also the input from the laptop so you can hook up a revising camera and play-station etc…. It uses a USB cable to handle the touch screen functions and then it's got another cable for the screen. I also ran a cable from my laptops headphones out jack to the AUX port on my stereo and that way I have all my MP3’s running though winamp or something similar all easy accessible by using the touch screen and another program called roadrunner. The unit is a single DIN unit which suited me fine. I got it from these guys BRASH IMPORTS but I don’t see it on his site anymore but no harm in asking I guess.

The laptop is my everyday laptop but I have a profile for work and then a profile for the car. I am running Oziexplorer with the Hema maps and some other maps. I have a USB hub next to my seat where the USB mouse plugs in the USB cable for the touch screen and then I can also plug the camera cable in to download photos or plug in the Garmin hand held if I need to. I am running it the laptop from a cheap inverter and have worked fine for years.

Thanks Troll

I have just ordered a 8" VGA Monitor with TV tuner & speakers, a DIN wedge mount and a mouse GPS aerial, so here goes my first attempt at this new experience. I am going to buy the Oziexplorer software as a starting point which I am sure will lead into a continual money spending experience. Why do we want so many gadgets? Must be like boys with toys. I am off to do the Tassie wilderness in end December and January so this will be a good chance to learn and play with this system. So long as I don't get stuck in the quick sand on the west coast.

Thanks for your advice and from everyone as this is a great club where everyone helps each other and we are getting proper advice from the users of equipment rather than salesman trying to sell products. Kind regards and happy adventures, John
