G'day forumites, just fishing for ideas. My Suburban 22litre HWS in the van is playing up. The problem is that after switching on the starting sequence works fine but when it times out the whole lot shuts down. The main flame should continue to burn until the water is hot but it doesn't. Same on each restart. My thoughts are either the safety device has failed, the thermostat is short circuit, or the electronics are stuffed. Has anyone had similar problems?

Hi Ian,
Have absolutely no idea about caravan hot water systems, however, if it's anything like a domestic unit it probably has a flame failure cutout of some sort. A very common method is through a thermocouple device, which sits in the flame and as long as there is heat, it holds the main valve open. These things do tend to fail after a while from continuously being exposed to the gas flame.

You can recognise the thermocouple - it's the little bulb thingy that usually sits next to and in the pilot flame and has a small diameter copper tube going back to the gas valve. They are usually easy to replace and not too expensive.

Hope that helps mate
Cheers

Hi Ian

It could be several things wrong with the system,
get it fixed by a Licensed Person, these DIY jobs can end up
costing you a fortune, if you play around with Gas Appliances,
I have seen the results of people trying to fix Gas Heaters, and
blowing them selves up and there property,
The Insurance companies will not accept claims, if they find out, a
Unlicensed person has attempted to fix it.
Just a bit of advice from a Plumber.

Cheers

Dunno 'bout that. One has to consider the ecoonomics. E.g, New circuit board = say $30. plug in 3 wires , all fixed. Plumber = $100 to look at it, $50 for new circiut board, all fixed for $150. Guess I'll do it my way!!! Thanks anyway Daza.
