I have been planning a Simpson Desert crossing e to w, Birdsville, French Line, Oodnadatta, Marree, Innamincka, Brisbane, beginning approx 23 Sep this year. Unfortunately my travelling companions have had to pull out recently. I don't want to cancel and I'm looking to link up with others who have similar plans. I'm not keen on an organised tag along but willing to modify plans somewhat to fit in with others. Can anyone help?

no need to cancel, go on your own and please yourself where you camp and how far you travel each day etc. its not remote enough to be dangerous, there will be heaps of other travellers out there if you get into strife.Enjoy.

"its not remote enough to be dangerous"
We crossed in May 2003 and only saw 2 other vehicles. If thats not remote, what is? How soon could you get emergency help if you needed it. cant just nip dowwn the local camping store when you realise you have left something home. It is certainly remote enough to be dangerous. We travelled alone but had sat phone and plenty of spares and food supplies.
Cheers Peter

Bill, with respect to BP I think his advice is not sound. He has no understanding of how difficult and varied the desert can be. Sure, I travelled the Simpson and noone in our group had any difficulties but if you're alone a simple failure can be catastrophic. I hope you get at least 2 or 3 others to join you! Never underestimate the harshness of the Australian Outback BP!

I was out there a month ago. I saw first hand what its like. Of course if you were travelling alone you would have reliable communications, that goes without saying.I'd have no dramas about travelling alone out there. There are heaps of travellers there at the popular times of the year. You only see the ones travelling in the opposite direction. I would be very surprised if you stayed in the same place for a couple of days and no one came along.
cheers

Hi Bill,

A couple of other guys from this site plus myself are looking to cross from Dalhousie to Birdsville via the combined route (treks notes this site). We are meeting in Broken Hill on the 18th or 19th of Sept if you are interested. The dates are close, but they may not suit you.

I have not met the other guys, but I hooked up with them from this site, so I am sure you will do the same.

I'm considering doing a e-w crossing of the Simpson about a week after that (or maybe a w-e crossing a week after that again).

A friend here in Broken Hill is able to get away a week before I do, and I think they're keen to get away asap, which is probably about the time you want do it as well. They're keen on towing a trailer, so they will probably end up on the Rig Road.

Cheers

Stephen, Thanks for the response, I'm keen on the French Line only because I don't want to carry much extra fuel and I need to back in Bris. by 3 or 4 Oct. However keep me informed of your friends plans. Bill.

Bill,

I'll be doing the run fromk Camerons Corner on 27 Sep (or there abouts) with one or two others (4cyl TD). route is to Mt dare, chalbers pillar, ayres rock ???, oodnadatta, marree, broken hill -> home

contact me 0408 390 240 for details

You would need to be fully self sufficient for supplies, spares and fuel. All camping out each night is expected. NO trailers
