This is not a topic of which is a better all round type of tyre but of which tyre ( A/T only ) resists cuts and chipping the best when used mainly for driving ( and towing ) on dirt roads ( from the local forest to the Plenty Hwy )
Currently running 245/75--16 Mickey Thompson ATZ's with 30,000 on them and they have chipped and cut up pretty bad to the point they will probably only last another 10,000..
Not expecting to get 80,000 out of something.......just would like something that wears down without destroying itself..

Gronk,
The ATZ is 70% Road & Sand 30% Dirt & Mud. IMHO that is the wrong tyre for your type of driving . I am running the MTZ and I will buy them again over and over.

Firestone Firehawk RMTs.
After my disastrous foray into the expensive world of Cooper tyres, I decided to only pay relatively budget prices from then on, after 2 sets of the aforementioned tyres I couildn't be happier, no chipping, no lugs falling off, no sidewalls collapsing & far better mileage.

They get my vote too. Good value tyres with exceptional wear.
May not be available in all sizes though.....oldbaz.

I live near the
Latrobe Valley & a lot of the
mine vehicles use them.
They have a quite agressive tread pattern for an all terrain tyre.

Agreed. I run 31 by 10.5 on a Hilux sprayrig, 90% offroad.
They are also quiet on the tar too. I couldnt buy 245/70/16 or
they would be on the Jack too.....oldbaz.

The tyres I've seen chip badly have been BFG ATKO, Coopers and Mickey Thompson.
Never seen a Dunlop tyre chip badly - for all their faults, the Grandtreks don't chip.
Goodyear MTR and Silent Armour are better than most tyres.
Bridgestone - seen their 661's chip, but others including 693 and 694 are good.

Silent Armour is the only way to go. 1trip 13000km with 8000km in 4wd not a mark on them . Another trip 5000km with 2000km in 4wd still no marks or chips.

The set of Silent Armours I had have done 45,000k of outback trips over 3 years. One staked sidewall on
Madigan line. Very minor chipping which only appeared this year. About 8mm tread left on a set of 4.

two tyres that haven't chipped for me, the Bridgestone 694 A/T and Simex Centipede AT300's. Simex (now Sime) is a damn good tyre at a reasonable price.
cheers

Gronk,
Haven't used a wide variety of tyres as some have but find that BFG AT ko's chip badly when used on gravel roads. Otherwise a great tyre.
Use Goodyear MTR's which are chip less, but seem to wear a bit quickly. Also use Goodyear TG's which are skinnys, and they don't chip, wear
well & generally give good service.
Currently running Hercules Terra Trac A/W's on wife's 80 series, and they are wearing
well, with no chipping. At less than $200 each, on a vehicle that now does less than 20K clicks/year, they are good value.
Bob.

Thanks for a few of the replies......sorry if some didn't see my 1st post.....I was looking for A/T tyres ( not muddies )....LT construction....10ply if possible ..
Use will be 80% road 20% dirt ( thats why I didn't want muddies...plus I want a nice quiet 4x4 when running up and down the freeway !! )..Yeh, I know in my 1st post I said mainly for dirt driving....but I meant that the offroad part of the driving will be dirt ( not rocks, sand etc )
