My son has converted a Patrol Wagon to a dual cab with tray, and v8 Holden motor. It is almost complete, and our insurers don't want to know about it. They have suggested he try Shannons, which specialise in "From vintage and veteran to classics and contemporary cars".

Any ideas about this or other companies that may insure this vehicle?

My Patrol is also a little modified..... 6.5 V8 Chev diesel; dual cab; 4" lift; 35" tyres.....you get the picture......

I have mine insured via TCIS Insurance Brokers (phone 08 8278 7000).

Over the years they have sussed-out the best (only?) insurer for me. I'm currently insured with Lumleys.

For TCIS to act for you, you have be a member of a recognised 4 wheel drive club (which is a good idea in any case in my opinion).

Good luck

Hi Motherhen

I can echo Roachie’s comments. Whilst NRMA would insure my vehicle and modifications they wouldn’t do it for the amount I wanted. I arranged a valuation on the vehicle through Pickles and TCIS brokers placed it with a specialist insurer.

Good luck…..

First thing you'll need is an engineer's certificate approving all his mods legal for road use. Usually start at $500 and go up to a few grand depending on mods.
Then when its legal to drive on the road, i'd ask a 4WD club who they recommend for modded 4WDs.
Ps i know Shannnons would run screaming. They changed their policies a few years back and wouldnt renew the poicy on my stock HSV let alone a modified car with different body and V8.

HI Roachie ,
Funny this has come up today as I was pricing insurance this morning and can't seem to find anyone to insure the new mods on the car. Now like you with the chevy 6.5lt, and new spray paint plus extras we want to increase our insurance. Putting it over the pits with RAC in 2 weeks but pretty sure they won't come up to the value I want.
Phoned Shannon's today also and they didn't want to know about it over $35,000. Ours is a 2000 troopy and they said the car wasn't old enough to have a greater value on. Will follow up on TCIS insurance brokers tomorrow.
Cheers Red Tail Black

I should also add that the "agreed value" would not be sufficient to totally replace what I have here. I totally understand that I bought a relative bargain in 2006. For example, I had looked into having my then GU wagon converted into the same set-up I now have (which I bought off ebay for $38K in 2006). A Chevy conversion was going to be about $24K and the dual cab conversion about $12K and then the large box on the back would cost about $10K.

So, in my mind, the real "replacement" cost for my current rig would be about $86K....based on the following:

Buy a 2000 model Patrol (with blown motor perhaps) : $20K
Chev conversion $24K
Dual cab conversion $12K
Cargo box $10K
Suspension, transfer case crawler gears, air locker, fridge, compressors, reverse camera plus all the other stuff listed: about $20K.

The "agreed value" I have with the insurance company is only about half of that amount, so I am realistic in my acceptance of that figure. There is no way I would get more than about $40K for it..... (hell.....if I tried to sell it I probably wouldn't be able to get $20K for it; who knows?)......

Dave,

I got my suspension from www.bigo4x4.com.au

but I can't recall what the part numbers were. I do know that I had to get 6" rear coils just to cope with the weight on the rear end and to get me an overall 4" lift.

I have moved to them a couple of months ago and found them the best and cheapest and the fact that they are underwritten by CGU can only be a good thing

I use DGA too, have done for about 8 years. Had a few claims and no problems.
I have agreed value on my Troopy for 65k, cost aprox $1050
Now is the only time you own
Decide now what you will,
Place faith not in tomorrow
For the clock may then be still

I have tried Shannons another car and found that if you get a quote that is over the top, try to call back and get some one different and you will get another price.
DGA is what I have found great and they have a specialised 4WD policy.

Hello Mh
The key for me with Shannons was to insure the vehicle
- as not driven to work everyday
- garaged at home
Both of these things are true, and they were cheaper than anywhere else I found.
There are other mobs suggested to you on this that I didn't know about, and didn't test.
I will stick with Shannons.

We have shannons. we have both the rally car and cruiser insured with them. The rally car only comes out to play a couple of times a year. We ring shannons and tell them its locked up. They reduce our premium. The cruiser has a half roll cage which other insurance companies didnt want a bar of. Its plated and passed through QLD Transport. Its completely covered.

DGA will also do a policy based on 10,000 km or less per year or the normal policy.
Whenever I have had a heavily modded vehicle (like my dual cab 80 series with 6 inch lift etc) they were the best. Although they mainly offer a market value policy. This is made up of the current (as of claim) value of the basic vehicle, current value of extras and current value of mods.
Or they will accept a written valuation from a licenced valuer to make it an agreed value policy.
They have no exclusions for mods and accessories and cover you anywhere in Australia regardless of it being a public road.ie if you drop it in a ravine they will pay to remove it whereas others make you pay for the removal of the wreck back to a road where a 2wd towie can take it away.
I have found them very good to deal with. No affiliation.

Hi Bevan

The insurers are working for themselves not for you, and will look for any excuse to deny a claim. Even getting a straight forward claim through can sometimes take a bit of a fight. If it is not legal and not in line with licence, they have a wonderful excuse to deny the claim. You could also no doubt be fined by the authorities in your state as well.

They will also deny if the driver was unlicensed or over the legal alcohol limit, unless it is a documented car theft (eg not one of your kids going for a spin and letting one of his mates drive).

I have even heard of an insurer denying a claim because the owner hadn't let them know he's got a speeding ticket since his last disclosure. Read the duty of disclosure on your policy well - if you can get through the gobbledygook.
