Wanting to get to the CSR next year via a different route.
I have read that travellers have in the past been able to access the track between Balgo and the CSR to the south of
Lake Gregory athough this area has been 'closed' in times gone by. I have sent two emails to DIA in
Perth asking whether permission could be granted, but no reply from them this week.
Anyone out there who has done this route and from whom did you get permission?
Cheers

Willem,
Suggest you contact the Shire Of
Halls Creek on 0891689101.
If nothing else they should be able to advise on where to obtain permission if you require it.
Cheers

Willem
We did the CSR south to north in August this year and came out via the road from the csr around the southern end of
Lake Gregory, camped at Handover
camp which was
well sign posted just south of
Mulan. Headed to Balgo via
Mulan after paying
camp fees at
ranger's office. Fueled up at Balgo. We were not required to have permits. Travelled from Balgo back down the Tanami.
Cheers

There are permanent Police at Balgo these days. You could call them for some advice. They drive everywhere.
Don't know if they can help but it can't hurt.

Hello Willem, In June/July 08 I was driver on Birders tour and we turned off track ~25k south of Billiluna and carried onto
Mulan and around bottom of
Lake Gregory back onto the CSR just around
Well 51. This area is the Paruka Indigenous Protected Area. We obtained our (pre-arranged) permit to access/
camp from Office at
Mulan community. Image Could Not Be Found
According to the
sign (bottom left corner) I photographed on way out it is $40 per car for first night and $10 per extra night, $10 for a day pass. There are restrictions on where you can go and where you can
camp - they supply you a map. Appears you can rock up anytime you like an get a "pass"..but not sure of the office hours - as you know it may be slightly unreliable. If you can't find contact number for
Mulan I can contact tour operator and get it for you (if I can track him down).
According to the map they gave us you can only
camp at Handover (20° 10' 55.54"S 127° 32' 11.01'E) or Yunpu (20° 13' 08.25"S 127° 16' 30.76"). These are signposted so you cant miss them.
Cheers
Greg

Thanks Greg
Sounds like a better option.
No doubt we would be able to get fuel there as
well. Having maximum fuel load closest to our intended destination is imperative.
I have Googled a phone number for
Mulan Community.

Yes fuel available, and a
shop for supplies. Recommend you turn off any emotion you have for badly treated dogs when you enter the area though, maybe it’s typical for this type of area, not sure, doesnt seem to raise much comment around the place. Maybe youre not allowed to say/do anything?
Cheers

Thanks Greg
The indigenous culture has a different perpsective about their dogs, than we have. I haven't questioned why their dogs are in such poor condition but see the results when I have cause to visit communities in the outback.
Ooohhhh..... hopefully we will be down to $1.20litre or therabouts...or am I dreaming?...LOL
I paid $2.25lt in Balgo at the beginning of June this year.

Hi Willem,
Can't help with access question.
Re the CSR. When were you going to do the CSR? I'm with a group leaving
Halls Creek beginning of July.

G'day Phil
We will be in the area, first week of June, weather permitting. That is if the area around
Well 51 isn't flooded.
Cheers

Yes fuel was available at
Mulan. The store at
Mulan and Balgo did not open until all the kids were in school on a week day. Not sure about the weekend.
Cheers
