Brake light problems

Hi Folks
My 2000 Prado has developed a very frustrating fault in the brake lights. They come on intermittently when the vehicle is parked with the ignition off. They may even come on when I am driving but that is impossible to tell. I have just come home from holidays and when the vehicle was parked up for a few days the battery went flat. There was nothing else switched on so I can only attribute it to the brake lights. There were a number of occasions when I discovered them on and other people reported the same thing to me. They would stay on for anything from 5 seconds to 10 minutes. Nothing I did would seem to turn them off (pressing the pedal, starting the motor, etc). In frustration I removed the fuse only to find the lights still coming on. THAT confused me!!! Another camper suggested that it could be a problem with the electric brake unit (Tekonsha Voyager). I am reluctant to simply replace the unit for fear that the problem may be a simple (lol) wiring fault and spending that money won't fix it. Has any body struck this problem before, or got any ideas?

Hi
I also had the same problem with the Tekonsha I had fitted. I replaced it with their latest unit and have had no problems since.

The voyager was renowned for causing that problem. A warranty replacement was available a few years ago but I doubt that you would get warranty now. The problem was fixed with the replacement voyager.

My suggestion is to get a prodigy. Same 4 wires, same colors, easy to swap over.

I think you will find that Tekonsha will still replace it for you, particularly as this is a known problem. Just disconnect the Voyager to see if it is the cause.

Just to prove that it is the controller disconnect the brake trigger wire fron the lights and see what happens.

Tessa,
The other cause of of your problem might be a sticking brake light switch (located behind the brake pedal). Had that happen on other vehicles, and the brake lights stay on.

Hi, most likely it will be the spring that pulls the brake pedal upward. What happens is that the tension on the springs reduces over time and the brake pedal then drops (intermittently) which causes the brake lights to turn on.

This is the exact problem a friend had with his Prado. Initially he considered many other reasons (like yours), but ultimately it was this very simple fault.

Cheers
Steve

tessa - i have same model prado and same brake unit and also have the same problem as you. i have found that if you find the brake lights on, move the manual slide switch on then off, or simply push it to RHS to full off, and the brake lights go off. makes me think it is a problem related to the brake control unit. i did not know about the warranty issues so will also look into a replacement under warranty if possible. i will be interested in seeing how you go with a replacement and also if the simple pushing on the switch turns the lights off. i even resorted to taping the switch to the RHS and it seemed to help most of the time. You may even notice a "clicking" noise when they come on and this stops too when you force the manual slide to the RHS - even though it is milli-millimetres (if thats possible) cheers....

Thanks for your input. My Tekonsha unit is as old as the truck, so I think I would be pushing it to make a warranty claim. I now remember reading about the dramas with these units a few years ago and thinking how lucky I was to have got a good one (lol)!!!! I have disconnected the wiring to the unit and don't seem to be having any more problems. I won't need it again for about 3 months , so I might approach the manufacturer, but I don't anticipate any joy there. I guess I am just relieved that the problem seems to have been resolved. I can just imagine the cost involved in getting an auto electrician to diagnose it. Once again membership of this site has paid for itself !!!

Tessa - i looked up previous thread 30490 and it even takes you back further in time with it being a known problem but they never recalled the model. some say they had success by going thru the USA who arranged a local Oz replacement. Maybe worthwhile following up?? I have sent them an email thru the www.tekonsha.com website. I found my receipt so maybe lucky? I believe there is a 5 year warranty with them. I would try them on and pursue the unroadworthy / safety risk option if need be. Nothing worse than driving down the local freeway at 110km/hr to unknowingly have the brake lights come on and the guy behind slamming on his brakes thinking you are an idiot stopping in the middle of nowhere for no reason. where in NSW are you? I am near Campbelltown and plan tackling this from tomorrow so will let you know how I get on. Most seem to suggest getting the prodigy as a replacement not the voyager. no harm in asking some questions from the manufacturer hey - good luck with it

Thought it would be worthwhile to post the reply i received from tekonsha in the usa. they were very prompt in sending it. it maybe a little long but thought some of the info maybe of use to others elsewhere in OZ - cheers...

Thank you for contacting Technical Support. In response to your email, I have listed Tekonsha dealers below located in AUS. They should be able to help you with warranty information. If you have any questions or need further assistance feel free to write back or contact us at (888) 785-5832.

Hi Paul
sorry I took so long to get back to you. Thanks for that info. I went into Newcastle today - got the runaround from the mob listed as the authorised dealer but they put me onto the firm that supplies them. Bloke in there was happy to talk to me, but didn't give me any great joy. Upshot of it was that he sold me a replacement model at trade price on the understanding that he will recredit my credit card if the warranty is approved. I took the liberty of printing out a copy of the email you got and that certainly seemed to carry some weight. The guy admitted that there had been problems earlier with that model. So, even if they don't accept it as a warranty issue I still got it for about $30 less than they are selling on e-bay.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Dunaruna - no i ended up with another voyager but one with the purple sticker not the faulty ones with grey stickers.

i offered to pay difference to upgrade to prodigy but Camec said they wouldnt as i had purchased it thru a third party (the auto elec) who had actually bought it from them. not sure how that matters, but i was just happy to get it replaced so did not want an argument that may have prevented a replacement at all.

do you have problem with yours? if so see my reply to Tessa below and it may help in some way (hopefully) - thanx

No, no problem. Part of my job is fitting brake controllers, we often swap out voyagers for prodigys.

We buy the units in bulk from a wholesaler (not camec). In 3 years, I can count on one hand the amount of faulty prodigys. Voyagers on the other hand, nearly every week we find a faulty one.

If the controller is a Tekonsha Voyager with a grey label, you should be able to get a warranty replacement.
I had a little trouble until I suggested that I would just contact Vicroads Road Safety division & report the fault, as I believe it to be very dangerous, they then replaced it immediately.
I have had no further problems with the replacement, burgundy label.

It was Camec that replaced mine with no receipt.

I now wish that I had reported it to Vicroads as I think they could be quite dangerous & should be recalled.

Tessa, i had mine relaced yesterday and it took some doing to get it replaced. folks in usa are great and quick to respond but here in oz you get told to ring someone else.

just thought i would suggest you have a look at the underneath of your controller for a blue label which i think is the date of manufacture. my original one had 8/03 from memory and the new one has 12/07 so it looks like these are date formats?? also like others have said the faulty one has a grey sticker label on the top towards the front and the replacement has purple.

i went into camec to get it changed over and they arranged an autoelec to remove/fit it and are sending the old unit and bill to usa for payment - good luck! hope yours works out ok, cheers mick

Tessa

as part of my emails to the usa, i mentioned that i had a "friend" (you) that was in the same situation as me, same car, same controller, same faults but you could not find your receipt of purchase. i did not say when you bought it or how etc, left it as implied that you could not find receipt so had no proof of purchase now except it is fitted in your car. i asked him if he could assist you or give any advice. The following is what i sent him in my email on your behalf:

PS. i know someone else here in Australia with the exact same situation as I was in,, except at the moment she cannot locate her receipt. She has the same car, same tekonsha voyager, same problems - brake lights come on randomly draining the battery etc. Is there anything that she can do to have it changed over due to this fault they seem to have had back then? Thank you Mick
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paul from usa sent me back a reply and to me he implies with or without a receipt dealers in Aus will probably still not replace it but he may be able to assist anyway. his answer is as follows:

Mick,
For your friend however there are many dealers in AUS that are unwilling to exchange even if you have a receipt. If she continues to have problems with exchanging a defective control feel free to write back to me and I will see if one of our reps over in AUS is still available for warranty. Thanks Again.

Paul

TESSA - I would strongly suggest you write an email to Paul Osborn as he does write back and promptly too. Tell him how you were forced to pay for a replacement and is there anything he will do to help. Hopefully he will get your supplier to send the invoice to him and recredit him and supplier recredits you OR he simply recredits you himself. My point to him would relate to the fact that had an official recall been done it would have been replaced. You cannot locate your receipt and dont remember when it was fitted. And its faulty type so regardless of the "when" it is still faulty. Hopefully he will help you out.

I was just lucky that after i showed his email to Camec they gave me a replacement, arranged to pay the auto elec to fit it (so i kept warranty on the replacement). i was lucky coz they could have said wait until tekonsha usa guarantees to pay for it but they took it on face value of his reply (and they kept a copy)

If you have any questions please ask but maybe better if i had a direct email for you rather than thru here?? persist with it and good luck - mick (pradoz)
