240V Freezer?
It will have a compliance plate attached that will tell you how many watts. That is the size inverter you will need.
240V appliancs will generally use a lot more power than an equivalent 12V DC model, and therefore will need more solar panels and batteries to run.

Cheers,

what the plate says....then alot more to handle the start up current.

I have a 40lt 240v waeco fridge/freezer Draws 60 watts. BUT on start up that goes as high as 600 watts

Most inverters can tollerate much higher currents than their continuous rating for short periods, so start-up MAY not be an issue. Check the specs of the inverter too.
MSW inverter MAY be OK for this application.

IST you need to know how many watts it uses
[should be on a name plate somewhere]
As in other post inverter would need to cope with start up surge current , also probably need to be full sine wave type[ exe$]
you also will need to consider battery & solar panel size,
It would be much more efficient to use a 12v freezer ,but any FREEZER is power hungry, if you intend to camp away from mains power.

G'Day,

I would reckon the inverter required would be fairly large, and subsequently fairly expensive, and also fairly hungry for battery power, which would mean a sizeable outlay to set this up.

I would advise you to consider 2 alternative options:

1 - buy a dedicated 12v fridge freezer, Engel / Waeco etc, bearing in mind this will still need a good battery setup.

2 - buy a generator. prob here is your fridge, whilst it wont run permanently, it will need power permanently, which means running generator 24 / 7 whilst away. This has issues with fuel / noise / some regulations forbidding use.

Therefore option 1 would be best choice.

Be very careful with this as the design is based on 25oC ambient and as the ambient rises so too the head pressure of the compressor and this could up to three times the continuous running watts.

Also Inverters have a surge capacity but again be careful as the cheaper Inverters have a very short duration surge capacity and may not start a fridge under the above circumstances.

I got caught with exactly this as the surge capacity was for 0.5 seconds after that the unit went to overload and when I questioned the maker they said the longer the surge capacity the higher the price so you should have a minimum surge capacity of 10 seconds to be sure.

I tried to run a small bar fridge (purely as an experiment) with a rating of 77 watts from a 600 watt inverter.

It tripped the inverter every time I tried.

During a blackout I used the Kipor 1kVA Inverter-Generator to run our two-door fridge with no problems.

I simply couldn't get it to run our neighbour's two-door fridge without it tripping out.

Not alll fridges are created equal.
