Was a little worried when I got the Pajero as it being Petrol I thought it might guzzle it a bit, But after 2 months of owing it, I have been blown away by how economical it is for a V6.

The facts,

549lt of regular unleaded to travel 4230 Kms

=12.97Lt per 100kms

Thats with a 2" lift, spotties, standard size tyres and a roof basket, mixture of about 75% round town and the rest freeway and one days 4WDing. I am impressed. I did read that when the pajeros went back to a SOHC motor the economy improved alot. This thing uses less lt per hundred than my Gu 2.8 diesel did.

Cheers Stefan

There must be Helium in those soccer balls to reduce the weight of the Poojero ;)

Well I had a 3.4L v6 petrol prado and sold it, not an economy issue, and ended up with a diesel naturally aspirated 3.0L hilux (lot cheaper) and am unable to get over 11L/100km (not towing anything) and that includes Fraser Island inland tracks. Around town it's 9 - 10. And soon I'm going to ditch the 15" alloys with 31" tyres for a set of 16" steels with Coopers something but 1/4" shorter and narrower (at the moment in the shed as the 31" approach illegal tread depth), from all third party comments I expect the economy to improve a tad more.

That against the prado which around town was about 14 - 15L/100km and offroad, well needless to say I've seen the gauge move when bogged and thrashing low range, so around the 17 - 20L/100km.

Doing simple maths I am so far ahead, at least 27% on suburban runs, this takes care of diesel being on average 20% more expensive, and oil maintenance periods don't bother me as do a lot myself.

The big difference I find is offroad whereas you need to tickle upwards on a petrol ( and consumption heads that direction too) to get the torque to move, with a diesel the wheels just chug round and round at slowly around the 2000rpm mark and you chug out of the boggy bits. Love it. Won't go back, but then again we all have different purposes and desires so I don't begrudge your change, of course I had no experience with the venerable but often criticised 2.8 patrol ( and don't start me on my front end diff).

Keen to hear more.

The old 2.8 GU was trying to push 2600kgs around and struggled to do so hence 16li per hundred was normal for that car. While a nice big diesel would have great low down power. The petrol in the Paj and 2.8 diesel in the Patrol hit Max power at about the same revs.

Most diesels should get better than a Petrol, but 12.97 average for a V6 pushing a brick is pretty fair I reckon

that's scary figures for your old diesel, you did well then, enjoy this petrol price. And yeah, on my v6 prado best i got was fraction below 12/100km but with no-one else in the vehicle and nothing else than me and sitting below 100, so good buy with the paj.

cheers
