Double Island Point to Rainbow Beach - Impassable

Hi all.. just to anyone who is interested, was at Rainbow Beach Yesterday and tried to head South to D.I.P. Even at the bottom of the tide, the rocks are impassible unless you are happy to drive into about 70cm of salt water. Had to resort to Freshwater track

I was at Double Island a week or so ago and even at the eastern end of Rainbow Beach the fallen trees made for some entertaining watching as people drove into the waves to get around them..

As the tide was at around half out we stopped with the kids for a swim and fish as there would be bugger all traffic.... OMG I have never seen so many four wheel drives go for a swim in salt water in my life.... What would possess someone to drive their beloved four wheel drive into the sea water? and not just once or twice but there would have to have been at least 30 cars I saw do it in the space of an hour or so.

Was there much sand on the Rainbow side of the Leisha track?

I am heading up there over Xmas and am hoping I will be able to park the car there for a couple of hours, even at high tide, while I paddle the kayak around getting my lures bitten off by mackeral.

sorry Lazzybugger, not sure where the track is.. if you can explain it to me I might be able to let your know but I must confess to pretty much only passing thrugh the area on my way home from Fraser. I generally try and avoid the whole DIP area now becuase it is so busy.

Off to the right (east) of the Leisha Track has good sand and the old sand spit is reforming nicely almost to the point where it was 20 years ago when there was an inland lake section off the beach... however if you want to drive the beach it is really a low tide option.

At high tide the beach is impassable due to some fallen trees and the water is pretty much right up to the base of the dunes at high... when I was there it was passable there for about 2 hours either side of low tide but other than that it is a great place to swim with the kids etc....The beach did open up more the closer you got to Rainbow though.

If you want to park at high tide I suggest either coming from Freshwater track and on the Eastern side or get there early and wait the tide out.

cheers
