The thing you are liiking at is the outlet for the flue for the cooling system boiler that is heated by either gas or a electric element when you are on 12 or 240 volts

I will find a link for you & post it so you can see for yourself how a 3 way operates

The flue is for the release of the fumes created by the heat transfer to cool the firdge using 240 Volt or gas. When running the fridge on these sources get up close and you'll smell the ammonia fumes and feel the heat.

12V is a maintenance source and won't generally produce as much heat or fumes.

If you smell some ammonia it means that the cooling system at the back of your fridge has leak and you should attend to it quickly.

what wizard wrote
"When running the fridge on these sources get up close and you'll smell the ammonia fumes and feel the heat."

he makes it sound like you can smell ammonia all the time.... which is course is not right
you may or may not smell ammonia if your fridge develops a leak. Absorption fridges work under a vacuum so the first thing it will do is suck is in air...then depending on where the leak is one may get an ammonia smelling solution or vapour leaking out...if a very small leak you maynot notice anything
