I have had my 1990 terrano for a couple of years now and spend all my off road time on beach sand.
I have manual front hubs and i was thinking about permanently locking the front diff so that it was only engaged when the hubs were in.
I remember from years ago that a diff could be locked by welding some of the internals.
This is a cheap diff lock but it is also a cheap 4wd, can anybody add more detail to this idea ?

The terrano has a limited slip rear diff and looks like a 60/40 split between the front and back so i am thinking that locking the front will help with more drive from the front wheels.
I expected steering to be compromised but thought that this would mean wider turning circles.
I usually run 18psi fully loaded on the beach but we have had the water over the bonnet a few times when we have been moving around creeks and beach rocks so i am looking for more traction when the going gets a bit tough.

Lucky Pierre

Funny thing about Diff Locks, not really needed on sand. Will not get you out of trouble, in sand..

Go get a 1/2 decent compressor, from a 4x4 shop.
let your tyres down to 15 psi and watch the difference, and go to 10 if you have to, and you will never look back.

Much better idea.

Cheers

Thanks Bucky,
I agree low tyre pressure is the secret on the beach.
But I am looking for the extra traction that a locked diff can give, even in the sand.

go on, weld it then. if its lsd on the front youll burn your clutch plates while welding too..........
remember you will have to dismantle both front swivel hubs, wheel bearings, cv joints to get to it . might as well put in a mechanical locker (600$) while its all apart, that way you know it will work...

Try this link. Its about all after market stuff for that vehicle. It may help as it states the diff is the same as a Navara. http://forums.overlander.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=510391&sid=da387daebbb3fc34dcab7c64fc9eb6c6

Thanks Tony,
the overlander forum is referring to a Terrano II sold in Aus, mine is a Terrano I grey import.
Unfortuinately parts are not interchangeable.

Give 4WDsystems a call or email...

They dont state the Terrano on the website but do in the fitting instructions.

Nissan 4 Pinion - suits Patrol GQ/GU (front leaf), Surf (rear), All Toyota LSD rear (L/Cruiser, Prado, 4Runner, Hilux, Bundera), Pathfinder, Terrano, Dana (some)

If you weld it the second you drive it you will wish you didnt!!

Goodluck

Matt.
