Hello Everyone,

On 4 July 1987 we planted an aluminium pole with a plaque on it depicting the approximate position of the Geographical Centre of the Simpson Desert. The co- ordinates for this plaque are Latitude 25 degrees 22 minutes South and Longitude 137 degrees 5 minutes East.

This position would be about halfway between Poeppel Corner and the Colson Track Junction and 2 degress north of the French Line.

The question is.........Has anyone been out there and seen this plaque or does anyone know of someone else who has been out there and seen it?

This was in the days before GPS( at least the hand held ones) and we used a sextant and a small calculator to work out our position....so we could have been wrong...but, and I assume, not by much. There are a couple of seismic tracks criss-crossing to the east of this position.

I would be very interested to gather any information on this plaque.

Cheers, Willem

The question is not if anyone has seen it, but is it still there ?

Interested to know if its still there as that was a long time ago.

Ahhhh Bonz...I found an article in 4x4 Australia July edition 2003.....yeah thats the Geographical Centre of Australia. I am talking about something quite different.......situated in very rugged country where there are no roads apart from some seismic shot lines. Unless ofcourse the reference to my plaque is made in the August edition which I do not have. Will go down to the newsagents tomorrow.
