Hi I tried a search for this but got a million pages about engine fans and fan belts LOL.
I live out remote so can't really duck down to a
shop so I need some help.
I'm after a very low amp eating
camping fan. I have had the old style oscillating fans like in Dad's XY wagon ages ago but I don't think they'd be particularly frugal, tell me if I'm wrong.
I did see this
Coleman fan it runs off a D cell so i think I should be able to drop 12v down but i was hoping there might be other options as
well.
Has anybody gone down this path? The amount of noise is a consideration but not a deal breaker as we live in the top end and have fans on most nights.
Thanks,
Sam.

Whitworths have a 12v fan, in the current catalogue.

Cost $24.95 and uses 1.4 amps /hr.
cheers

I bought one of these a few months ago but never got around to using it until the last weekend. We were
camping up
Cape York and it was 35C at 9pm. The first night it worked fine, but the next night the damn thing didnt work, I was fairly dirty as it was so hot! I think I'll buy a better quality fan for the next trip, I suppose you get what you pay for in terms of reliability, but I am sure there are many other out there that have never has a problem with them.

Funny Sam , I was at our local Bunnings on the weekend and couldn't walk past one of those 40cm pedestal fans , nice black colour it was and only $11.90
Works off cheap can sized inverter.
Thought I might take whole thing
camping, but while its big it does pack down to a reasonably small size.
Definately does the job and quietly mainly because it pushes enough air even at low speed setting.

Did you measure the 12 V supply current? What was it? I would expect it to be a lot higher than a purpose built 12 V fan.

Hi Peter
Did not measure current and agree it could be a lot higher for the same thing.
Would be an interesting test and might surprise us.
Could be a bit like the BMW M3 getting better consumption than the Toyota Prius as per top gear last night.
I.E. I don't know of a 40cm 12v fan to check, but maybe in terms of effective airflow the bigger slow moving item might come in pretty
well on its low setting, particularly if the 12v fan was controlled by a simple and inefficent variable resistor.
food for thought - I might try and do a theoretical calc just for fun.

Try Kmart, they are discounting all their Coleman fans.

SHAKER.....pity you didn't bother to read the entire thread from SAM who stated they live in a remote area. Guess a quick trip down to K-Mart is really quite out of the question.
Have a look at this site, they specialize in 12 volt equipment
12 Volt SHop They will also do mail order for you. Good service too.

DIO .... shame you didn't think before you made your smart comment!
Firstly, you can
shop online with Kmart & secondly, he may have friends or relations that don't live in a remote area!

I tried calling Kmart today as I can use bushorders BUT I need a product number etc I spent an hour being buck passed around Kmart but alas nobody in
camping to actually speak to. I can order online but ti is geared to items only in the catlledog. Other items just generate a phonecall from bushorders/layby ....................................... eventually.
Has anybody got the Coleman? Is it effective? How much? I remember when they first came out they were $35 but never saw one out of the box let alone running LOL. Anyone given it a poke and a prod, drop test etc?
Cheers,
Sam

Just a thought - A 120mm PC Cooling fan might be the go -- Don't know there amp rating is but they are longlife and efficient and easy to get hold of from
places like www.pccasegear.com.au

I'm liking this idea a lot. From the bit i have seen of the higher end units like Troopyman linked they kinda look like pc fans just with foam blades.
I've got a couple of small fans here out of old pc power supplies and they are 55mm, rated 12v one is .11A but the blades are smallish the other is 0.26A same size blades but the motor is twice as thick. On 12v the bigger one is very noisy with a high pitched whine while the other is quite reasonable.
Steve could you please post what the 120mm motor is rated at and what the actual consumption is.
Cheers,
Sam
