Changed my wheels (have a road and off road set) on the w/e and on tightening the nuts (with a torque wrench set correctly) I proceeded to shear off a stud from the passenger rear wheel. On taking to Nissan dealer for replacement of the stud, they have proceeded to shear off two more studs. Have heard other cases of similar incidents on forums and was just wondering if others who have experienced this problem, like me, use a portable 12 volt impact wrench to take off the nuts? If so, perhaps its the sudden "shock" being transmitted to the stud and somehow weakening it. Does this sound too far fetched?

Yep, it is a
well documented issue on this
forum. You may do an Archive Search for more info. When the GU wa built Nissan definitely 'weakened' some aspects of the manufacturers build(my thoughts) especiall in the wheel stud department and also the gearbox on 4.2 diesels.
The problem seems to be on GU's only although I had a similar mishap with the GQ in 2007 when the rear passenger wheel went walkabout. I tend to think it was my fault for not tightening the nuts
well enough.
I never use anything other than a normal Cross-type wheelbrace. Tighten them by feel and loosen them easily.
Cheers

Maybe replace the studs with a NON Nissan brand and keep the rattler away.....
How tight is the specified settings ???
Can you undo them easily with a normal cross brace ??

tighten to 110 whatevers in the old system, & yes they're relatively easy to loosen.

I think you've answered your own question;-))
I got me one o' them there Shentai impact thingys... Handy gadget for loosening stubborn nuts/bolts...
The first time I used it, I made up my mind there and then,
There is _NO WAY IN THE WIDE WORLD_ that this thing is going anywhere near my wheel studs/nuts!! not even to loosen 'em...
Far too savage for that application IMO, particularly so, as the Patrol studs are only 12mm, and therein lies the problem methinks....

Yep, I think the same, GU and Toyota are very small diameter studs, I looked across the other day in traffic to see huge nuts and studs on a Disco or Range rover, forget now, but way bigger and they look like what the rest of 4x4's should have.. Michael

I think that Landy's have bigger nuts only, their studs are a similar size.

Gday Michael,
All the post 1999 (5 stud) LandCruisers use 14mm studs and 22mm nuts. They have higher torque settings too.
Not sure how big the Rover ones are.

Land Rover have 16mm studs. That's why they have bigger nuts too.

The series 2 Disco, D3/RRS has 14mm studs, same as the Cruiser, that's 9/16 in imperial all the other Landys are 16mm.

What's the go with all these rear wheel studs breaking?
I don't have a GU, but wondering if I should wear a crash hat when I see a GU coming towards me just in case a wheel visits me.
I am no engineer, so really I guess, I shouldn't comment on it, but has anyone had a front wheel stud break?
Does it generally happen with the alloys, or does it happen with steel wheels too.
Maybe if it only happens with the alloys, and on the rear axle, is it possible that the casting where
the nut sits is not true, and eventually the nuts work a bit loose and with the torque of the drive, maybe there is enough stress there to weaken the studs.
As I say, I am no engineer or even a mechanic, but I do wonder about the vehicles heading towards me.
Remember what your Dad said, treat everyone else on the road like an idiot. But you can't help it if a wheel comes rolling towards you.
Ask Craig Lowndes.

just,
Let me guess the rear left hand wheel with alloy rims. Had one on
mine do it at 100klm/h and 60,000klm on the clock. I didn't use the 1 volt impact wrench although I guess the guys that do my tyres used an air wrench. Good luck.

Michael,
No they were all sheared off at the face of the disc. Had a hell of a time trying to get 6 new one just 1 day before Christmas at
Tenterfield as every one was on holidays. It was lucky that a salesman came in to get something he left at the car yard or I would have been spending Chrissi there. As it was they only had 4 so I installed them myself and limped back to Brissi. 80klm/h max. Lucky also that I can do a bit of Mechanic work otherwise I would have also been staying there as
well.

Just had another 2 go on the front discs. It appears the last guys to touch my rig used rattle guns and as a consequence I have to replace another 2 but will replace all 6 now as I guess they all will be suss.
