Hi,
We are in the process of having a camper trailer made, but are now looking at insurance.
The policies seem quite vague ... with some policies saying they cover contents in annex - but this has to be locked?!?! I like the idea of having my portable fridge insured, but how do I secure a fully enclosed annex (I mean its really a canvas tent!). SOme policies read like they are a caravan policy which is not really applicable to camper trailers made from canvas.
Ultimately I want the camper insured in case of a major road accident where the whole thing gets wrecked (which I hope never happens!)
Has anyone got any advice regarding who to go with and ease of making a claim. Even what to look for as essentials in policies.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

My policy says the same about my CT being locked and all is insured.
I queried this with them and they said if you have locks on the zips, presumably the only other way in is to cut the canvas, and then it is obvious there is a break and enter.
That's what I was told anyway.
RAA insurance.

No such thing as 'break and enter' on a tent, camper-van or caravan - unless used as permanent place of residence and fixed in one location.

What do you mean?
Are you saying that regardless of policy, 'break and enter' cannot be shown. I was told on the phone by one insurance company that as long as forced entry can be shown (ie. slashed canvas etc) then it was covered.

I am with AAMI and they ask that I lock the zip with a small padlock and then if the canvas is cut, thats "break and enter".
I would question the advice given above!!!!!
Ask your insurer about the above claim, I have, I am sure that the above claim is false.
Colin.

Thanks.
I phoned them yesterday and they certainly knew what I was talking about when I phoned. They also were the most comprehensive, includes contents - but also the most expensive ($250 annual fee for $8K camper).
I have been ringing around and there is certainly alot of variability about what will and won't be covered and prices! Also you need to specify annexes. I've got the impression that it is a caravan policy framework now incorporating campers - some of which makes no sense!
We've camped for the last 20 yrs, so insuring our gear is not a big issue - if some sods what our old worn stuff so be it! However our portable fridge is a concern - hence the contents.
Summary so far:
RAC - $225 no contents
GIO - $109 incl $500 contents (this one is what I'm probably going to go for). For theft you need to just show that there has been forced entry.
QBE - $179 no contents for canvas walls.
SGIO - $219 no contents for trailers.
Ciao.

We reinsured our camper trailer yesterday with SGIO. Contents, including insitu Chescold frig, bedding, clothes up to $1000. Laptop, camera & Engel in car should be listed under your household policy. Other items such as HF and UHF radios are covered under car policy as long as you specifically list them same as goes for laptops cameras etcc on house policy.
Cost wise camper is insured for $8500 premium $165 (includes 60% loyalty bonus for multi-policies). Swagman camper is 11 years old & doesn't owe us anything. When we rolled it on Kalumbaru Rd 4 years ago they repaired $4,000 damage with no problems. Even asked if we needed help, accommodation - this was after we had bashed it back into useability & proceeded to live in for 2 weeks & drive into phone at
Kununurra.
SGIO girl a delight to deal with. Cheers John

Just changed my C/t insurance from AAMI to NRMA. AAMI put
premium up 35%. NRMA about the same money but guarantee
the sum insured for the life of the policy. That is...insure now for
$8k, still insured for same in 10 years time. The premium ??
who knows. It seems all will do a deal to get you, then sting you
later. I find insurance a pain.........oldbaz.

Try CIL Insurance they are a specialist to some degree in the industry.
Toll free number is 1800 112 481
I use them myself and the policy is nice and clear.
Have had customers make claims through them and all was smooth.
Cheers.
