I ducked into an Aldi store today and saw they had double swags on special at $99.00, reduced from $149.00.
This seems incredibly cheap, even for a single swag, but with this double one you can have your best mate (er wife) or dog in there as
well.
Are they any good?

I could tell you whether or not my wife, best mate and/or dog were any good, but I think I will pass on this one.

From what I can gather, some of the Aldi
camping products are rebadged Oztrail.

I bought one when they were $149:(
Overall
well made, poles have heatshrink over the fibreglass (reduces the chance of splitting or if they do split then at least they'll vaguely retain some structure), no-see-um mesh, adequate zips. Downsides are: mattress is only 3/4 length but reasonably supportive (thermarest over the top helps), carry bag is huge and no compression straps and on ours the end guy rope tag has been sewn so the guy rop goes over the pole at the foot-end rather than under it (I couldn't be bothered taking it backas it works fine anyway).
The canvas is proofed but I wet it down anyway. We'd ussually have a tarp strung up in any case. It was dry inside even after a good hosing but that doesn't prove that it will stay dry in solid rain (not a problem as we're in Victoria...)
For $99 it's a cheap way to find out if a swag suits your type of
camping.

From my couple of swagging trips I have decided that the quality of the sleeping bag inside the swag can be far more important than the quality or otherwise of the canvas. in other words $99 canvas might be just fine but a $25 sleeping bag will not ... unless you have your best mate (er wife) or dog along to help ... and like Adrian says, try before you buy, it isn't for everyone

Sleeping bags of any quality don't tend to work real
well if they are wet.
I would suggest that the quality of the swag is just as if not more important than the sleeping bag.
Spend the money and buy a known quality product for both the swag and the bag and you may just enjoy your trip without being cold and /or wet.
Cheers
