Anyone who has purchased the full CD of City Navigator 2009 (not the update) and installed it to the GPS may find that CN 2008 is still installed in the unit...ie you will have 2 sets of mapping, what I did was find the file and deleted it (gmapprom.img) IMG File (.img) , it will be the one with earlier date if you do a Properties on the file, And before you delete anything at all copy the whole lot of the files and folders in the unit memory to a folder on the PC ....Just in case you make a stuff up, the screen shot below will give some idea but remember the dates and sizes etc on yours will be different.

Hi Doug
Good advise - I have also been experimenting with Garmin Mobile PC (nRoute replacement), Garmin XT for PDA/smartphone (Que replacement) and Nuvi set ups. I have found you can have three .img files on your SD card and Device will be able to use all 3 - handy if you wish to use specific maps for specific purposes/locations on device
Named as follows :
gmapprom.img - (Say City Navigator)
gmapprom1.img - (Say Bluechart)
gmapbmap.img - naming convention for supplied basemap
Can have basemap and choice of one detailed map set on at any time - just toggle on/off in Tools>Manage my data>Mapsets>Mapsource
Just cannot get my Bluechart maps to view colours and some symbols correctly at the moment (any ideas ?).
I also see a new Nuvi style device that is waterproof/marinised/multipurpose - will be great for the boat.
Cheers

Hello....you can also use
gmapsupp.img
as a file name for maps stored on internal memory. Seems to only work on internal memory but my testing (on colorado/oregon) has been limted.

Hello - sorry stuffed up - gmapsupp.img is the file name used by Mapsource when you compile map...so it is standard.
gmapprom.img was the file name I was thinking of. As mentioned only appears to work on internal memory. Thanks for heads up on gmapprom1.img, will try it.

Not quite sure of your specific setup, but if you rename a file to gmapprom1, also make sure the corresponding mapset .unl (unlock) file gets renamed the same way or it wont work - back up these files first. The unl file also needs to be a true unl file (you read them in notepad and they often get saved as a .unl.txt) - the system cannot read the .txt file extension (as Doug mentions above)
Yep - gmapsupp.img is the Mapsource file - usually this is all I do and create new mapfiles and transfer to unit when I get board with current mapset
Cheers

Gday Doug,
Ive got a Nuvi760, When i go into mapsource and plan a route and try to send it to the device it goes through the motions, with the progress bar and says transfer complete, but when i check the device to see the route its not there. And if i plan a route on the device and try to send it to the PC nothing transfers. The PC recognisers the nuvi but it seems the transfer part of it doesnt work. Any suggestions?

OK Here's what you do, screen touches in order .
After you upload the route from the PC to the GPS touch
TOOLS / DOWN ARROW / MY DATA / IMPORT ROUTE FROM FILE / and select the named route , tick it, then at the bottom of the screen / IMPORT.
When making a route you can also make waypoints along the route.
Hope this has been a help to you
Doug

No worries - I was confused as
well. My Oregon 400c has a file called
gmapprom.img - but it is the g2marine basemap that comes supplied with the unit. As you will know maps compiled by Mapsource are by default called gmapsupp.img...so I am assumming your Nuvi came with City Nav 08 preinstalled (hence gmapprom.img name) ...to remove possibility of overwriting if you added other maps to internal memory like oztopo.
Cheers

I have gmapsupp.img files on Sd card working no worries - just place them in the Garmin folder on card when prompted from Mapsource when it finds the unit.
I believe you can have a gmapsupp.img on internal and another on sd card and it will allow for you to toggle mapsets (handy if internal memory of device is small say with a PDA etc - but I am yet to experiment with this

Would this apply to the FREE map we got when we bought the Nuvi 310 on special recently.
It said it was the 2009 but on the screen it says 2008.
Am confused now but then I am quite often.
Clarification would be good as I dont have my USB connecting cable at the moment.
TIA
