hi all
just purchased a 10 year old van going to do the bearing and grease
which is simple enough. it has electric brakes which i am not familiar with. is there any thing i should be looking for or should this job be left to the experts. i am quite comfortable doing normal brakes but the word electric kinda throws me.
thanks in advance to anyone who answers.
regards

Hi Al,
The only difference is the magnets which drag on the drum and activate the brakes via an extra lever. The brake shoes and adjustment are exactly the same as normal setups.
Just check the magnets for wear. Someone might help me out here, but I believe there are wear indicators/holes in the magnets that indicate when replacement is required. Mind you, they last a long time so hopefully yours are all good.
While you have everything apart, check the wiring for integrity and make sure the wires are not rubbing on the drum as it rotates. Manually operating the brake controller in the car will activate the magnets, so you can also check that they work - hold a steel screwdriver against the magnet while someone momentarily operates the controller.
That's about it methinks.
Cheers
Gerry

and check the shoes for cracks, there has been some crappy linnings from the U.S. flooding the market in the past few years (alko and dexter).
