HI all,
I am thinking of buying a dicso, looking at a 1995 TDi Auto.
why?
have had a lot of Jeeps and have gotten over the unreliablity and expense.
need a capable 4wd that can tow my little caravan.
fuel economy is important to me.
the same money buys me a rusty 20 year old Landcruiser.
any thoughts, ideas and knowledgable comments would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
I drive a 98 300 Tdi Disco Manual and in the old money consistently get 30 mpg or 11kkm per litre, or 9 litres per 100 km, this is everyday driving. Have owned 300 Tdi autos and for town driving you tend to be in a lower gear than a manual.
Like any vehicle if it is high Ks then repair will be likely.
What I especially like about this engine is it is no rocket science, just an old fashioned push rod engine that is very relaible.
Naturally I am biased due to my business
Alan

JAG6670,
Don't buy it! It'll be gutless, the interior plastic's really poor quality, you'll be on a neverending chase to get rid of the oil leaks and the tailgate rattle will annoy the hell out of you. It'll get great economy, feel like you're cruising down the highway in your loungechair (maybe because they pull the same speed) and you'll become emotionally attached to the thing. I had a 1997 TDi Discovery and everytime I see it I wish I still owned it! :-)
The timing belt alignment issue is overcome with full kit that replaces the gears and idlers to stop the belt walking forward. Have heard no ill reports about the auto. Get the roof checked and repaired correctly and it'll give no further rust issues. Oh, and make sure your insurance covers windscreens too, as the moulds need to be replaced each time the screen's replaced and that doubles the bill!

if you think the plastic is poor quality on these cars, don't get a Jap car. The Disco has had it's problems, (don't they all?) depending on model, but I don't think "plasticky" is one of them

Have to disagree Steve,
I have to think back to our 1985 Ford Telstar to find the same crap plastic use. The Disco still had that hard crap plastic everywhere inside. I honestly believe it's not up to our harsh environment here in Central Qld. I've had a Nissan for the past 3 years and can let the kids climb over the centre console into the back without fear of them falling through! Honestly can't say that I've seen any Toyotas with that really brittle plastic inside either.
But, I did still love the old Landy. Hmmm, that one in the car park with the cooked motor could make a nice toy if the owner's prepared to part with it for the right money!
